Default Fishy question...

In general, when compared to chicken and meat, how cheap or expensive is fish in Canada?

I warned you it was a fishy question?

Very. We like to have barbecued tuna or swordfish about once a week but, if we're pushed for cash, we skip it and eat porterhouse.

(That's Toronto, mind, it's another story in Newfoundland).

Ys 'By. I's got a fishbox full of salt cod in the shed and cod fillets in the freezer. I's can do you some shrimp and mebbe some crab or lobster. What other fish is there?

Cod is cheap here (probably comes from China). Most other fish seems expensive or even unavailable. I looked at some Halibut steaks the other night and they were $10 each. The striploin I had t'other night was $3.69!

I'm prepared to hazard a guess that proportinately Steak is cheaper than ANYWHERE else in Canada, Chicken is definitely proportinately more here than in montreal.
I would also be prepared to bet that fish is proprtionately more expensive in Calgary than the maritimes (or even vancouver)

Salt cod is cheap here too but no one else in our house will eat it. We pay $6.25/lb for premium steaks from free range angus cows and about $15/lb for halibut of unknown provenance.

Is 290 grams a standard unit for fish in Calgary? Here what they use is lbs which is easy because it's used for all sorts of commodities and that facilitates comparison.

Good quality salt cod here can be quite expensive (have to check it out for the prices though). Hmm, starting to get hungry!!!

I have no idea whether 290 grams is a standard weight or not, it seemed an odd number to me when I looked on their website.
