Default Firewood in Nova Scotia

Having just arrived in NS we are finding it a bit late in the year to be getting any firewood. We have electric heating in our house so we won't freeze, but a wood stove in the lounge which we want to use and it would be our only heat in a power outage.

The only wood we have been offered requires collection and as we don't have a truck or a trailer we can't collect. Other wood on offer is $240 a cord split and delivered which sounds really expensive.

We only want 2 cords and we live on the Eastern Shore (Musquodoboit Harbour). Does anyone have a contact who has firewood, or know of anyone in our area who will collect and deliver in our area or who would rent us a trailer for half a day (we have an SUV so towing it wouldn't be a problem).

If anyone in the area is having a part load delivered we would happily share the delivery costs and add ours on to the same delivery.

Hi Try this link for registered firewood companies in NS............

http://www.gov.ns.ca/snsmr/firewood/registrants.asp

We got ours from Good Wood Fuels and although they were saying delivery would be September (this was in July) they then worked over the weekends and we got it within a week. They charged $215 split and delivered. I am not sure how far they deliver. There are a couple nearer to you on the list though. hth

Firewood -

Somewhere around $225 - $240 per cord is the going rate this year in the Halifax area. That's cut, split, & delivered. Last year it was $180. These guys are extra busy this year so if you want wood before Christmas order it now.

If you have a chain saw you can help yourself to a selection of soft and hard wood fallen trees in my yard. I haven't got the nerve to use a chain saw myself so the woods free to anyone who has!

No got a chainsaw yet, but it's on my hybby's shopping list so watch this space.

Besides, you don't want noisy machinery going on, it'll wake the baby.

How is life for the newly expanded family then?

You don't know what your missing, I love using a chain saw. Ours is only a 16inch electric one, but it works perfectly on the smallish trees we have and Mal has cut down the odd 60 footer with it as well.

DNS we have loads of wood and no wood burning stove so if you want to pop over you can take as much as you want

Sounds great. I have an hour spare at lunchtime, do you think the round trip would take much longer than that

No problem - nearest airport is the lake and I'm not sure if sea planes can make it that far. Leave it with me and I'll stop the next pilot, if he's got nothing to do I'm sure he'd love to pop some over for you

Wow! So pleased I am not paying that kind of money it soon adds up 7 cords a winter. The chain saw will be out again this year to cut up all the wood we bought last year. I think we will be paying around $160 if we have to buy any.

Destination- I hope it's a big stove, because electric heat does not give out that much heat, you will need it when the temp really drops. Our log home as a stove for 2000sqft and electric heat but the walls are 18" thick, but I prefer my wood/oil furnace in the century home it keeps the house lovely and hot.

Our house is really well insulated and faces due south with most of the windows at the front. There is no basement and it is built on a thermally efficient slab which stores heat. The electic heating isn't baseboard heaters but an air circulation system under the floor which aswell as putting out warm air, helps to keep the floor warm.

When we were buying the house we saw the bills for the last 2 years and they weren't too bad at all, we have also met the guy who built the house and he came around to explain it all to us.

We were flicking through the TV channels last week (in the hope of finding something worth watching) and we saw a Halifax based home building show where our system was being fitting and they were talking about how efficient and economical it is.

The true test will be after our first winter, but I am hopeful.

Eeeeek!!! We took delivery this week of 5 cords, split, delivered...... 90 dollars a cord! Including tax (if there is any on wood.... ).

All I had to do then was buy a wheelbarrow to get it to the woodshed.

It took us 3 days to move it (a couple of hours a day!). They don't offer a stacking service.

But 240... that's a lot of money when you think how plentiful wood is here...
