Finding employment

Hi

My husband and I would like to move to Canada but we would like to have the security of having employment before we get there. My husband is a Senior Lecturer at a university, he lectures in Computing and Software Engineering so he would be looking for a job in that field. I work for Local Government as a Revenue Officer. Does anyone have any advice as to whether there are any employment agents we can register with that can assist with finding these type of employment? Or is it recommended that we apply directly to a University or Government that is advertising a position we're interested in?

Thanks:unsure:

Hello, karenb73, and welcome to the BE forum.

I would not bother with agencies if I were you. Well, you could include a couple of them in your job hunting mix. But I certainly would not spend most of my efforts on them.

University Affairs is a good place to start looking for jobs at universities.

Governments don't very often use recruitment agencies, as far as I know. They usually post their vacancies on their own websites.

The federal government is very reluctant to hire foreigners. Provincial governments prefer to hire Canadian residents, but will hire foreigners in a pinch. Municipal governments seem quite open to hiring foreigners.

The City of Calgary, for example, has quite a few British expats on its staff. Alberta has been experiencing an oil boom during the last few years. The City of Calgary has been so short of people that it has even conducted recruitment drives in the UK.

I'm not necessarily suggesting that you focus on Calgary. It might make more sense to figure out where your husband can get a job first.

The best thing you can do for yourself right now, in my opinion, is to read the Canada section of the British Expats Wiki. It has an extensive sub-section on Job Hunting in Canada, which I urge you to read.

Hope that helps.
