Finally visiting Nova Scotia in 2007
Hi, We have been visiting this site for sometime now and are finally planning to visit Canada. We hope to visit some time from late april to june for two to three weeks. We want to land in Halifax NS and hire a car and travel around Nova Scotia, we're not sure where, we are thinking maybe the south shore. If we manage to go for three weeks we would hope to break our traveling up by staying in three different lodges/cabins or cottages for around four days and in between staying in B+B's and Motels for no more than two days at a time. The only place i really want to see in Lunenburg. We want to get a real feel for Nova Scotia and would like to visit City to suburbia and country to coast. Also we have a 4yr old.
As a long time visiter i know i will receive expert advice and that is why i am posting on this forum. Thanks for reading this. Jason1969 |

Re: Finally visiting Nova Scotia in 2007
Hi,
1, Does anyone have information on: Places we should visit, stay? 2, Has anyone been and could offer a route to follow? 3, Maybe things to avoid? 4, Any good companies, food, clothes, car rental? 5, Anything we may not have planned for: Taxes, road tolls, Bears. Anything will help. I am sorry but last night i spent ages righting a question and after i did a spell check and my computer froze and i lost the lot, wanting to post something i rushed a second attempt. |

Hi
Your best bet is to request a Doers & Dreamers guide, they are happy to send them overseas, see attached link. http://www.destination-ns.com/forms/guide.asp Have fun! |

Hi
For car rental I would recomend www.wheelsabroad.com We have used them 3 times now and found them to be pretty much the cheapest and have a really good website. When you look at the different companies don't forget to look at whats included in the base price . Eg colision damage waver, spouse included to drive at no extra cost, unlimited milage etc. One other thing I would say about booking accommodation is to look carefully at distances. Living in the UK it is hard to appreaciate the distance between places over in Canada. We booked a self catering cabin in NB in the Fundy Provincial Park because it looked pretty central to where we wanted to research, but it turned out to be an hours drive just to get out of the park before starting our journey each day! so be careful of that. Have a great trip. Penny |
Re: Finally visiting Nova Scotia in 2007
We stayed in the Country Inns & Suites (Dartmouth) we though it was very nice and reasonable.
http://www.countryinns.com/ We originally wanted to rent a car from enterprise but wouldn't take a debit Visa card but out of all the car rentals Alamo was the only one that would take the card, and they were nice. We also got gas included in the rental and found (at the time) that to be a cheaper option, theres plenty of car rental places at the airport. The bridges have tolls (cant remember how much it was, can someone help?) Think it might have been $1 or less The ferry is a good way to get across the water between Dartmouth and Halifax if you are going by foot, this was only $2 You might like to see the Hockey and you can buy tickets online http://www.halifaxmooseheads.ca/ Oh theres a great sweet shop in Halifax called freak lunchbox, It was open really late too it's on Barrington Street www.freaklunchbox.com/ I never did these but the kids might love the harbour hopper http://www.harbourhopper.com/ and the Nova Scotia Museum of Natural History http://museum.gov.ns.ca/mnh/ Theres load of stuff to do and I was going to mention the doers and dreamers guide but was beaten to it lol Theres also a free Halifax guide too http://www.destinationhalifax.com/order-planners.php or go to http://novascotia.com/en/home/default.aspx Have a great time Emma oh and here's "some" photo's of our trip, if your interested? http://www.flickr.com/photos/or4ngec...7594420686825/ |
Re: Finally visiting Nova Scotia in 2007
If hiring a car over the internet bring your email confirmation with you including the fees you were quoted and deposit/fees you have prepaid. We had a problem with car hire with Thifty Car Hire in Halifax but had all our paperwork with us to prove that we had hired at half the price they were now quoting!!! It was all sorted out in our favour (including free upgrade) but may not have been had we not brought the paperwork. :)
Here is a little mileage calculator for distances in NS http://novascotia.com/en/home/planat...alculator.aspx |
