Default Filing Income Tax Returns for Year 2005

Hi,
I Landed in Toronto as a PR on October 2005 and left Canada just in 2 days after Landing formality.
- I've applied for PR Card (Automatic) and SIN from HRDC.
- I don't have Canadian Bank Account, Health Card, Driver License.
- My Spouse and Daughter have also left Canada with me.
- I've been using my Canadian Friend's address for HRDC and CIC to conatct me if needed.

I am continuing my employment in US and I like to know.

- Do I need to file taxes for Year 2005? ( Became Cananian PR on Oct 2005).
- If Yes, Do I need to declare all my US Income as world Income.
- Is this true that Canada has a tax treaty with US so that you won't be double taxed.
- On the account that the Tax Treaty exists between US and Canada, the Income Tax in Canada is higher than US, Do I need to pay the difference to Canada.

Please share your ideas, Im planning to talk to Tax consultants.

I am looking to move to Canada this Summer Permenantly.

I've collected some Links that could help People filing taxes.

I've copied the comment below from some other forum.

You can use TAXTRON for free (download from their website taxtron.ca) if your taxable income is less than $30,000. or you can buy TAXCEL (downloand from their website taxcel.ca for free) for only $8 plus tax and do unlimited returns.

Thanks.

I am not a tax accountant but was in a similar situation. Landed in Feb 2004 and left in 2 days. Here is what my research back then yeilded.

You only need to file your Canadian tax return if you became a TAX resident of Canada in the same year. Tax residency is different from you PR status, in that it evolves around your "residential ties". i.e. if you permanently reside in Canada, have a bank account, own or lease property etc you are considered to be a tax resident and need to file taxes. If you came for two days and left, this does not make you a tax resident.

Here is a link to a specific section on the CRA web-site that talks about it.
