Fall River,Nova Scotia

Hi
so many people moving out to Nova Scotia since we became members of this group.
Just as a reminder, who is thinking about Fall River or have definite plans and timelines?
Most of us have probably already been in contact but it can't but help having a thread with all the prospective 'Brits' moving to FR or thereabouts.

My timeline is
Total application from AOR to visas...16 months
2 holidays to NS...total time so far.....28 days!
Out to NS for a few days from 25th Jan.
Landing 6th may 05
Moving into our new house 9th May '05.

Best thing about Canada so far..........Outdoor life for the kids.
Worst ...........................................Poor retail,mozzies.
Best tip(s).........HSBC(premier),HIFX,Zoom,a2btravel.com(for flights in the winter),Spring garden rd.
Worst mistake.............Reversing into a ditch, spending too much time looking at v.similar houses.

NEWS.........Ikea being built in FR (thanks Wendy),Recreation centre being built soon.

IKEA :) :) :)
Funny but I just had been at the Ikea.ca website before checking this forum.
I mailed them to ask if they delivered to NS but it looks like I may be able to collect. When are they due to trade?

Sorry if I'm a FR outsider but 45mins down the 101 and I too will be buying a Visdalen cabinet :D About half an hour quicker than Lakeside!

The last I heard on the radio news was that Ikea is opening in Burnside, Dartmouth in 2006. Shame as I will be moving to Ontario then! But in the meantime they do deliver to NS for (I think) a $59 charge no matter what you order.

Yes I read in the paper that Ikea was going to be one of the new anchor stores in the Burnside Industrail Park...suppose to be a shopping complex like Chain Lake Drive. Ikea used to be in Dartmouth, in Highfield Park but closed due to not enough business....lets hope all you immigrants can keep the store afloat this time! I also read in the paper that another new shopping complex going in in Woodside. So you will all have loads of places to shop.

The husbands are on a reckie end of Jan so we'll have more info when they come back. Timescale so far, miles away, still waiting for AOR! only submitted forms to the agency last week. Wish I could speed things up a bit but we shouldn't wish our lives away should we?

Hello all, we are also looking to Nova Scotia - AOR JUly 2004 - skilled worker so some wait yet.............However we were just surfing through the NS Government sites and were trying to decipher how to get your NS driving licence....and more to the point how long it will take.
Have any of you guys got any info on the procedure?
Thanks

Hi
don't know for certain but i'm sure it's not a one for one basis like Ontario.I presume you have to take a test which you will not be able to take until you have a SIN no.
Mike

As a visitor you can drive on your British License.
Once you become a permanant resident in NS you have 90 days to get your NS licence. Yes incredibly, we will have to take their full theory and on road test! :scared:
This link will help...www.gov.ns.ca/snsmr/rmv/licence/
I ordered the Nova Scotia Driver's handbook from the NS government website to do a bit of groundwork.
www.gov.ns.ca/snsmr/rmv/licence/handbook.asp
It took a month to arrive. It would be worth picking one up if you are over and I assume you can get them from the Access Nova Scotia Centres such as at:
West End Mall
6960 Mumford Road
Halifax, NS
B3L 4P1
1-800-670-4357

Re: Fall River,Nova Scotia

Theres nothing to the tests. The theory is about 20 questions and they are multiple choice and the driving is literally around the block. I was out for 10 minutes and that was it. We were talking about Blackpool and ebay while I was out on mine!!!!

Just for other people who come over like I did by inland spousal sponsership. Although you wont have your PR immediately, you still have 90 days to do it from when you land. I think they should add in winter driving into the test for us Brits as the roads are like sheet ice today and I wouldnt have a clue what to do if I slipped on them other than panic!! Did it the other night and felt like I was on my sons xbox racing game!!

Hi Jo

Just to confirm, did you need to have your SIN # before you could "sit" your driving test?

maple Jan 12th 2005 11:52 pm

Re: Fall River,Nova Scotia

Thanks everyone for replying - just looked through the recommended site though and the way it reads to me is that you have to hold your learners licence for 6 months and all that entails until you can sit the test for the full licence. I am SURE i must be reading this wrong but can someone just clarify which tests they were obliged to take and if they had to wait between them?
Thanks again.

Hi Wendy

Been doing more research since we saw you on fall river and area. It's high on Dave & Co's list of places to see. Also PM'd Mike, looks as though he's there the same time and is going to meet up with the guys. Might even get a look at his pride and joy in miller lake eh Mike? Take care, will speak to you soon

Hi Wendy

The missus and I are flying out on 28th Jan. Are there any pictures in particular you want while I'm there.

We buy the house in Lawrencetown on 1st Feb, but will be driving all around the area.
