Some sports cars are: The Austin-Healey 100/4. The Lotus Elan. The Lotus Seven. The Morgan +8. The Ferrari Dino Spyder. The Jaguar E type. The (Shelby) Ford Cobra.

The definition doesn't change because you've felt the need for something more sensible. My diesel, a John Deere, more precisely captures the essence of a sports car than does any station wagon, no matter how technically advanced it may be.
Your link, btw, claims the Audi to be a "sports-focused compact executive car", which sounds like something a sports car owner's Dad would drive.

Cars like the Audi you linked to may have sporting intent, or sporty handling, a sporty interior, or a revvy, sporty engine, but it doesn't make them sports cars per se.

Those are sports cars,40-50 years ago!!!beautiful models yet I doubt hardly anyone who owns one of those ever even drives it let alone in a sporty manner!!!
For whatever reason you wish to be picky over a description,an Audi s4 is an exeptional car,does everything right,I think Adrian was just trying to be helpful and assist Robert/angela in their vehicle choice.
Modern sports cars IMHO are BMW m3,ford Rs models,evo,subaru imprezas etc etc,Ferrari/Porsche etc are supercars way beyond most peoples incomes.
For Christ sake there'll be people on here next saying that a Mazda mx5 is a sports car cos it's got two seats!!!and if anyone even mentions that disgrace to the great BMW name the mini in the same breath as the word "sports car" then I will strike upon thee with furious anger!!!

I don't recall BMW, Subaru, Mitsubishi, Ford etc etc ever marketing the models you mention as sports cars. I think they understand the market classification of their models pretty well.

Thank God someone on here knows their cars. You're right about the BMW X5very much what we've researched, it's the sports but diesel we would like. It's a little dream that one day we'll own one, not for poseur reasons nor status. We both enjoy what it offers. So I'll guess I'm going to be put into the same category as the others, oh hum!!
However, I do like some of the suggestions coming through. I'm inexperienced about American models. I do particulary like VW and Audi.
It's good to hear plain simple advice than being tortured by criticism
Other parties:
As regards emigration what's this to do with cars??? I run my own small business and can manage the pressures. Visas be here anytime soon, wasn't so bad! Even say if we didn't get visas I can live with that without crying and happy to make the best what I have.
I have noticed on a lot of threads people become so damn judgemental and it doesn't come across just a 'little ribbing', I don't know you! Quite insulting and rude. They sway from the original question asked and humiliate them as if it's a joke, or twist things to a sexual nature and I get blamed for this!!!!
Anyway, there's some really good info and thank you all for this.

Hey no problem,I'm in the motor trade myself so I do know a bit about it!!!
you won't be dissapointed with the x5,they're so car like it's unbelievable,you'd never know your in a big vehicle,although by na standards it's probably quite small!! I mention the diesels as possibly not your best option out in can as most of na still think a diesel is something that sounds like a tractor,is marginally better on fuel yet vastly inferior on performance compared to their petrol counterparts!!!
The BMW 3.0l petrol is a pretty bombproof engine,regular servicing,keep an eye on the waterpump (must be metal impellor),they have a few issues with lower suspension bushes but that's about it generally.
As for the guy who spent $150 on an oil change as we say in Britain,you got done son!!!
