As some of you guys and gals will be experienced in this are has anyone got an example document, presentation pack of the sort of things that are included in a company relocation? Our packages included the following. House hunting trip. The employer pays for you to go to your intended destination to find a home (travel, accomodation and subsistence). Packing and moving costs. This will include insurance and the movers should have responsibility for customs issues. Legal fees involved in selling and buying houses. Estate agent commission. Survey and valuation fees. Stamp duty and any "welcome" taxes (although I'm certain about this one). Mortgage redemption penalties (the military also reimburses you if you sell your house at a loss). There was probably more but I've forgotten. There are really two parts to a relocation package. Firstly, the exercise should not leave you personally out of pocket. Secondly, it should not involve you doing the leg work. Relocation companies offer custom packages that can include settling-in services (mundane stuff like driving licences, schools, electricity etc). Relocations are not cheap and I suspect they may also be a taxable benefit. I think that has been discussed on here before. You should also look at your tax position in both the UK and Canada. Is this a permanent move? Are you going to be working in Canada for a UK company, or one working for a Canadian company? |
Re: Examples of Relocation Package
When we came here, OH came to a new job and we got everything that Souvenir mentioned plus 2 months free rental of a furnished apartment and use of a car plus $10,000 to purchase new electrical goods.

Re: Examples of Relocation Package
I got a 40% pay cut, but my boss picked me up at the airport and said I could stay at his house if I wanted to.

Re: Examples of Relocation Package
In addition to what tilly1626 mentioned, get the company to guarantee that, if you leave your new location for any reason, you will get at least as much for your house as you paid for it. I don't know that that's a standard benefit, but it's one that my husband negotiated when a company recruited him for a job in Houston. It saved our bacon when the company then transferred him to Melbourne and real estate values in Houston had dropped in the interim.

Re: Examples of Relocation Package
Some of these deals sound sweet (especially bazzz's) but I don't know whether they're typical... here's mine for what it's worth (note 15 year old news :)
They paid for two recce/house hunting trips for two people each time. They paid all moving / shipping costs including airfares for family of four. I received a one-time-only payment of 10% of the annual salary as "settling in" costs. They did not have anything to do with finding or paying for housing (other than the above trips). |
Re: Examples of Relocation Package
We came on a permanent transfer and we got the flights over (to move not take a look), the shipping of goods, 1 months accommodation, 1 months car rental, the services of a relocation company and that was it. No housing costs at all.
I know people who have come on a TWP that got flights back to UK once a year, private school fees paid, housing rent paid, car lease paid, the list goes on... |
Re: Examples of Relocation Package
I can only answer for Nursing Relocation in Alberta and they are not as generous as most of those mentioned on this thread so far. Capital Health offered; you would be met at the airport, assistance with 'admin' eg getting Social insurance number, finding a car etc, 45 days paid accommodation, 3 study days to assist with passing CRNE, $5000 CAD toward shipping and if you sign a contract at the end of the 1 year contract sponsorship for PR. DTHR are offering us $6750 relocation reimbursement fee ($8000 if fulltime but I am part time) and sponsorship for PR if we are happy with each other after 6 months. Quite a difference from some of the packages offered to others but we wanted to come to Red Deer so anything was just a bonus because we would have come anyway :D.
I would like to add though, DTHR have bent over backwards to accommodate us, helped with anything and everything we have asked. They assisted us in finding a home to rent.... the Recruiter used to search all the local papers and highlight properties which she thought might suit us and then scan the pages and send them to us, they contacted CIC whenever needed, sent necessary websites for OH's job search, car purchase...you name it they have helped. For us that is what has been most important, not the financial support but the practical support in our move to Canada. Good luck with your move Julie |
Re: Examples of Relocation Package
I transfered within a company and claimed (and was paid):
- Shipping costs (around $6K) - Temp health insurance to cover us until Ontario Provincial Plan kicked in (3 months later); think was around $500 with Blue Cross - A condo for a month while looking for somewhere to live ($2K). Wasn't sure about claiming this, but they were fine with it. |
Re: Examples of Relocation Package

Re: Examples of Relocation Package
WOW just seen this thread, we werent offered anything. As it was our choice to come here we had to do it all.
Mind you after reading this thread and thinking of relocating to Alberta in the near future, I'm going to make sure we get some help this time around. |
Re: Examples of Relocation Package
Some of these packages are fantastic. I was offered a package that included:
moving and shiping costs for household items. (not storage) $500 towards first months rental accommodation One way flights for family 2 weeks hire car All costs to be approved in advance and up to a maximum of $11000. I thought this package was generous :)but some of yours are almost unbelieveable. I suppose the difference is mine was not an internal/company transfer it was to start a new job. |
Re: Examples of Relocation Package
I'm getting nowt, but I am getting the equivalent of £5K more salary than I do in the UK....
