Exactly How Bad is it?

We are due to move to Toronto early next year and I am petrified of the lack of employment opportunities.
I am hoping that Toronto being a huge city there will be some opportunities, but how bad is it.

I work for the Inland Revenue and my husband is the Forces however his time will be up soon.
Looking at some of the threads its very worrying to leave 2 very steady jobs into the unknown of no employmnt at all. Is it true that the Canadians are looking at their own first before they will issue jobs to immigrants.

Also what is the best website for jobs in admin and management. :p

Thanks in Advance

Do you have to tell a prospective employer you are an immigrant if you have a visa ?

The accent might be a dead giveaway:thumbsup:

Or the fact all your schooling took place overseas OR the fact you have never had a job in Canada before.

All this assuming you're actually going to provide a resume and speak at the interview.

Prospective employers can't make you do either of those things. It's discriminatory.

Would that be in a negative or positive way:confused:

Your jobs with Inland Revenue and the Armed Forces doesn't really say what qualifications you both have. If you're strictly clerical then you are going to have lots of competition for jobs. If you have particular skills, trades, professional qualifications then that may be better.
I don't think that Canadian applicants come first per se, but you have no Canadian experience and that will be a factor, right or wrong.

If your husband's unit affiliated in any way with a reserve unit in Toronto, or elsewhere in Ontario? If it is, it's an avenue worth going down. Reservists have day jobs. The officers tend to have senior day jobs.

We're talking networking, here.

I just came back from Toronto and the two different company cab drivers complained about how bad the job situation is here. I really fealt sorry for them and asked if me if i could find them a job in London as they both had families and had been given notice of termination. The general atmosphere in Toronto is pretty tense as so many emmigrants left their home countries for Jobs in Canada and they are finding it pretty hard when they are laid off as the benefit system there is only a fraction of whats it is here in England

I've found most of the taxi firms in Toronto to be hiring.

I think any new immigrants to the UK aren't going to find getting a job any easier than here. If all they're interested in is claiming benefits, they'll fit right in with most of the people who left school in the UK in the last 10yrs. :p

Not being funny, but the problems most of the taxi drivers have in finding jobs is that English isn't their first language and it isn't up to the rigors of an everyday office type environment. This obviously limits them a bit, but is that discriminatory? :)

But seriously, there are lots of jobs in Toronto, the banks are hiring like crazy to help sort out their purchases in the "By one US bank, get one free" sale that was going on last year. Loads of back office opportunities have arisen out of that.

Yes there is a perception of economy slowdown, but most companies are only using it as an excuse, seemingly, to cut out the chaff and the people they don't want. Manufacturing areas is a different matter.

Agree with all of the comments with this.

I dont think its that bad, although I am talking of 4 years ago, when I was there. Being an engineer, I too was rather afraid, after hearing the usual horror stories of Phd professors flipping burgers in McDonalds!
But I applied and within 8 weeks, I landed a superb job, in my own field too.
The job market is rather different tho -- it relies a lot on that famous word -- networking! And you have to be adaptable, too, like taking anything reasonable that comes your way initially.

Mind you, its heading that way in England now too....:)

Its very difficult in smaller towns and simple because once you arrive you are affectedly unskilled worker. If you are lucky and a company doesn't mind that, you will get employment and might be less mula than what others in the company are making. You really simple have to go back to school and get your qualifications again. I think if you can your are almost better to arrive with a job but that is not always possible.

I'm only going by the grapevine here and what I read and heard over the years, your qualification are worthless. Might have change now. If so been pulled to one side and dress down if I'm wrong. but I'm pretty sure I'm correct. I think it cause the don't want 3rd world doctor practicing 1st world medicine.;)

We are in Richmond Hill and have been here 6 month as PR - my husband has a job but I have been looking for part time work and have more or less the same career as you as worked for HM Revenue and Customs for 21 years as a tax inspector in the UK - I have applied for about 150 jobs and have had 2 interviews - have appplied to local accountants, gone for book keeping jobs and am still trying - it seems to be back to this 'Canadian Experience' but if no one takes you on how can you get it - so I suppose that is just keep on trying. Good luck with what you decide to do.
