Everything's moving so fast!
This time last month, moving to Canada was a dream that we never thought would happen. Since then, my husband saw a job advertised online, had a skype interview and has had a formal offer!
The job is in Estevan, SK and we're flying out in a couple of weeks to meet his new employers and look around the area. They are applying for an International Skilled Worker Visa in the SINP category and according the the website, the processing time is 0.9 months! Anyway, I'm sorry to ramble...what I would really like to know is does anyone know where I can find a basic checklist of things I have to do before we leave and immediately after we get there? Forms that have to be filled in etc. Any pointers in the right direction would be incredibly welcome. |

Re: Everything's moving so fast!
Hello Oink - we're flying out in a couple of weeks to look around. I'm under no illusions and I know it isn't picturesque like Banff or cosmopolitan like Toronto but I've lived in Midlands mining towns and army camps in the middle of nowhere and am a pretty adaptable person.
It's something that my husband really wants to do and to be honest, I do too. We're at the stage in life when this will probably be our last chance and we don't want to look back in 10 years times and say 'what if...?' JonboyE - Thanks, I'll have a look at that :) |
Re: Everything's moving so fast!
I should also Google Estevan so that you have some idea of the city and the area before you arrive ................. it's so easy to come away from a site visit with just a blur of impressions.

Re: Everything's moving so fast!
Hi Scilly - yes I've been doing that. They've had some pretty impressive flooding this last week but overall it looks ok. My husband's new boss is English and has given us plenty of tips and advice about the local area too.

Re: Everything's moving so fast!
"middle of nowhere " has a different meaning on the Prairies than the midlands. you are an 8-10 hour drive to a major City or a 2 hour drive to a good sized city.
no one will ever come visit you down there. it may be ok if you end up meeting some good people but you may end up very isolated and bored. you could use it as a stepping stone into Canada as an LMIA should be easy to get as no Canadian would move there for a job. so could be a good way to get PR then get out. |

Once we've visit we'll have a better idea but I just want to do as much prep as possible beforehand. |

Lol I perhaps didn't explain that too well. I meant the army camp was in the middle of nowhere, the midlands mining towns are just a bit grim!!

Re: Everything's moving so fast!
I don't know .............. if you know what you are coming to, you can prepare yourself to a large extent ........
another thing, if it is isolated, you won't spend much money and could save a lot. As it happens, Estevan has a healthy population size for a town on the Prairies. It all depends on what you want ............. professional opera and theatre, probably not. Amateur theatre and light opera or musical shows, very likely, and probably of a high standard friendly pub ............ probably, Choice of night clubs or strip clubs ..... probably not! I've often been impressed by how much there is going on in small towns of 4,000 to 7,000 or 8,000 |
Re: Everything's moving so fast!
Welcome to BE!
I'd think of it as a temporary stop in your journey - if it's your intention to remain in Canada permanently. I would recommend starting your applications for Permanent Residence as soon as the LMIA is approved. You can read more about that here: Apply to immigrate to Canada and here: https://www.saskatchewan.ca/resident...killed-workers **Edited to add, just realised they are going to apply under SINP (that will teach me to read properly!) Duh! In the meantime, start gathering documents that you may need for your PR application and whittle down your belongings once you have the LMIA approval (not before, please!). It sounds like the potential 'boss' could be very helpful to you, I'd suggest asking for temporary accommodation for a month or so until you get settled! Best of luck - and if you have any immigration / work permit related questions, do feel free to post them in our immi forum! Immigration & Citizenship (Canada) - British Expats :) |
Re: Everything's moving so fast!
Thank you everyone for all your tips and advice.
I'll have a read of all the links you have given me and prepare for our scouting trip in a couple of weeks. |
Re: Everything's moving so fast!
If you haven't already come across this, Realtor.ca will give you a good idea of current properties for sale anywhere in Canada.
https://www.realtor.ca/index.aspx?cul=1 A bit like the UK Rightmove, but AIUI pretty much every Canadian realtor uses it...... Best of luck with the plans. Very exciting for you. Great idea to do a good recce trip. |
