Essential Paperwork/Documents

Hi all,

Is is essential to carry my file with my application for my canadian visa when I fly over from UK to Canada, & as hand luggage. The answer is probably "yes"...

I am limited to 20kg hold luggage and 5kg hand luggage which is nothing considering I am immigrating! Am planning to ship the rest of my stuff over once I get more settled in Vancouver.

Very essential doc's I would say are: Passport & Immigration Papers/Form.

Your comments appreciated!

Many thanx,
S

Won't get far without your passport. The immigration papers - they could be useful to wave in front of a 'more than my jobsworth' immigration official (I've met them). Apart from that, they could all end up in God knows where these days!;)

Thanx for comments!

I'm dreading packing (I went over 20kg when I returned from a weekend trip to Europe!) - I have to live on my 20kg + 5kg luggage until get more settled (job, accommodation etc) and then can ship my stuff over...

On the otherhand... my friend simply said: "Go shopping!" ...

I suppose my main priority will be the paperwork, interview clothes & prep...

I will just have to sleep in my coat since no room to pack my jim-jams!!

If it's that bad....wear your jams under your clothing, six pairs of pants, three sweaters! No seriously - have you weighed your case? Some of them weigh a lot and it's worth taking a lighter one

Hi Special

When you come on a one way ticket we are all in the same boat with the 20 bloomin' kg's - or you could be like me and be 50kg over :eek: only a woman could do it  I forgot about about 24 CD's and some DVD's etc stupid things which had to go into the cases. For me and Nate we had 5 cases :rofl: (am now really embarrassed :o)

I also had problems with my hand luggage too at Manchester Airport - they had me put even more stuff into my cases to meet the 5kg. I had my laptop with me so not much room left for 5kg.

The check in clerk at Manchester would only let me have the laptop and my wallet and 2 passports until I pointed out that the 1.5 inch thick file was NOT going into the case as I needed it for immigration  she must have thought I was a mad woman because I told her straight that she could stuff that idea where the sun dont sun !

You can take more than the 20kg on Canadian Affair for sure as long as you are willing to pay for excess - like me GBP300 :eek:

I am up to 6 suitcases, one laptop and two pieces of hand luggage for myself and one small child. I am going to just plead ignorance, just plead for it all to go on the plane and just close my eyes and pay the excess on the credit card.

How are you expected to immigrate with 20kg?

Re: Essential Paperwork/Documents

This is why I booked BA! (Still managed to have one case over the 23kg so paid extra £25 flat fee for that but not too bad).

With the charter airlines the ticket might seem cheaper but once you add on excess baggage etc I bet it costs more! I brought:

checked baggage: (free allowance = 2 cases x 23kg + sports equipment in bag)

* 2 suitcases, one 27kg and the other 20kg (paid an extra £25 as one was over 23kg)
* ski boot bag (carried at no extra charge by BA)

hand baggage: (free allowance = 1 hand baggage + 1 laptop/handbag, weight limit quite high I think)

* rucksack containing paperwork, money, documents, passport etc
* laptop in bag

Not bad eh? So got all the essentials with me, just one box on a ship on its way over containing DVDs, photos etc.

And when I got the upgrade to Club World I was even more glad I was flying BA! Being upstairs was fantastic, a great start to my new life! :p

£25.00 thats really good value, if you work it out cheap flights and exess baggage, verses BA flight and £25.00 thats worth considering
esp with a decent upgrade ;) lucky you,

last time i flew i had some huge guy in front of me reclined his seat ( well i think he did ) and had his fryer tuck stuck in my face for hours, i was litterely trapped in my seat couldn't even put my tray down  not fun when you are trying to entertain a 7 year old.

Cry, tears and snotters will make them feel sorry for you, you're so stressed to be moving away.........bawl......i'm sure you'll get some sympathy

We ended up with an extra 50kg - we had even booked business class so i think we got something like 35kg each, but family decided it would be a good idea to give us stuff last minute - after our stuff was shipped so we had to buy a few more cases too. Anyway they only charged us 50quid for it, which wasnt so bad, i think they just felt sorry for us

We are going with Thomas Cook, premium class, through Canadian Affair - I see we get 30kg each so I am hoping that the rest at excess will not be that bad - lol!

Other than that will revert to plan b - cry!

Hi all,

Thank you for all your great responses!

I read your responses earlier on but I've just been terribly busy so not posted a response. It really helps to share the experience with others going throu' the same thing & your responses put a big big smile on my face!

How can they expect us to immigrate with 20kg!

I leave for Vancouver next week! I have a friend who is coming over for a holiday a couple weeks after I land and kindly offered to bring some my things over!

However, this still leads me with my own luggage and massive immigration file etc, which I still need to bring with me... I just hope that there are sympathetic airport personnel around... ;)

Really excited... only 1 week left in UK!

Fingers X & Good Luck to everyone!
S
