Enrolling kids

When should kids be enrolled? Is it better to get in early so to speak, esp in underfunded/overcrowded areas?

Our school is enrolling kids right now for the September start of the new school year.

You can enroll anytime, but the sooner the better. We bought a house on August 29 last year and enrolled them in school three days before the start of the school year.

Years earlier. Would that work?

Thanks

only if you are thinking of a private school, and even they would insist on an interview with you and the child in the spring before they should start ....... and have the option of refusing to give them a place!

The state schools have to be fair to everyone in their catchment area. Usually Kindergarten and Grade 1 dates for registration are announced well in advance .......... parents form line-ups days before for the favourite (or thought to be best) schools.

Children in the school system move through the system unless you move them.

If you know where you are going to live and have figured out in which school's catchment area you will be living, email the school. I did. The principal answered my question: we can come and enroll our child the last week of August. No problem. I found that really helpfull. Oh and if I have more questions I can email the principal.

My grandson was enrolled in his Kindergarten in March to start in September, day after Labour Day

His parents had an interview and "introduction to the school" in April, including meeting and talking to the Principal, the Kindergarten teacher AND the person responsible for liaison between the school, parents and authorities for children who might need help and/or assessment

He has two "introductions to the school", one today and one next week, where he will be shown around, see and experience the class room and the playground.

This kid has been in Daycare since age 1, and in Pre-school since August last year.

In other words ............. if you are living where you will be living in September, and you have not already enrolled your child(ren) in school fro starting in September, you'd better get on with it as soon as you can, or you may not get a place in the local one.

In BC, registration for entry into Kindergarten and Grade 1 seems to be generally in March and April.
