Default employment rights

One of the guys at the local club got fired last week and he only got is 2 weeks! Far...that's pretty tough.

Which got me thinking, for tfw, what rights are there?

Does it just fall in line with employer policies or are there provincial regulations etc? (BC here) If my Missus gets pregnant, in a year or two, can they just fire her too?

Just got a bit worried Never thought of this stuff before

... are pretty weak compared to the UK and EU. BC has an Employment Standards Act. See here. People get sacked all the time - it's common occurrence in the workplace here.

You don't have the most significant rights in Canada well North America in general when it comes to workers rights, if your in a union you will have more protection then someone just covered under the employment standards act, but if a company wants to get rid of you, they will find a way to do it.

I always have the worry of getting fired, I have seen co-workers get let go for some small issues, you never know when you may get shown the door.

Ministry of Labour, Government of B.C., Employment Standards Branch, Termination Factsheet

Anyone can be let go with notice or no notice depending on the reason for termination.

http://www.bclaws.ca/EPLibraries/bcl...de/00_96113_01

Termination due to illness or pregnancy would not be a good move on the part of the employer.

Hi

On this note, I am a UK qualified Employment lawyer looking to move to Vancouver with my wife as all her family are Canadian citizens. Anyone know of any Legal recruiters?

The amount he got would depend on how long he worked there.

The employer cannot fire your wife for getting pregnant if they did, then she would call employment standards and the employer would be in trouble. Once she becomes pregnant she would work up until the end of her pregnancy and then go on maternity leave for a year. EI pays the maternity benefits.

You are welcome, if you have any other questions re employee rights feel free to ask me I know a bit about it as I have worked in HR.

Your are right the job market in BC is not very good and it is difficult to find a job and for every job posted there are hundreds of people applying.

OK here's another one: well paid jobs in Vancouver are very rare, agree or not

Depends on the job

And yes plenty of work in the claims side of insurance, in the 11 months I have been here I have had plenty of offers to move to other firms. I know quite a few people in the business I have networked well and so I hear about openings too. People always need insurance and there will always be claims, with climate change I won't be out of work anytime soon.

That's a good question as it can be subjective depending on who you ask and what profession they work In
