also Some poor oppressed grunts get 2 weeks max. Depends on your value offer, general approach, and employment market/sector, and if you can negotiate. R. |

Depends on each case. I get 5 weeks, all stats and Xmas/New Year week off too. That's more than I ever got doing equivalent work in the snivelling miserable UK after yonks of diligent service. But that's in BC. We don't really do much work out west. Too much fun stuff to do out in the bush.

Also please be aware that in canada you "earn" your holiday. So technically in the first year you cannot take time off. |

Not actually a "global" rule. In both my jobs here I have been able to take the allocated time in year #1 as I earn it in year #1. Some employers are actually cool.

95% of workers are wage slaves. I served my time being under/un/employed in Canada a tad too long. I can gloat

How does that count as serving your time Rich old boy ?
I dunno - I suppose it's the immigrants burden. R. |
Re: employers time off
Oil & Gas are a bit more generous than most - I get 3 weeks vacation rising to 4 next year (as I will have 10 years experience in my field), 17 flex days, 2 floaters plus all stat hols. This works out to much more than the 5 weeks plus bank holidays in the UK that I used to get. My husband (construction) (office based) gets 3 weeks plus the time from Christmas Eve until the day after New Year's bank holiday and then every Friday afternoon off from June through to August.
Encana were offering 6 weeks plus flex days for experienced hires earlier this year; CNRL offer every Friday off throughout the summer months which goes down a treat (although I know one chap whose busy time is summer so he ends up putting in 40-50 hours in 4 days rather than 5 so tends tocollapse on his Friday off rather than actually enjoying it) and most O&G offer a 9/80 work schedule so you get every other Friday off. I personally prefer the flex days as I can take them whenever and prove invaluable for things such as Doctors appts. I am yet to unravel the bereavement/compassionate leave clause in the HR website but I also imagine it is down to flexibility of your department manager too. |

My dog died and I was told (didn't ask) to take a couple of days off. |
Re: employers time off
I get three plus stats plus one floater. Next year goes to 4 weeks.
