Hi all

Have been trying to apply and submit resumes to a gov. department in Alberta. For some reason always comes back returned by mail delivery system. I know for sure that the delivery address is correct and on several occasions have phoned to get alternative mail addresses to use. They all seem to be returned saying something in all the guff that comes back about policy denied. (Their address finsihes with .ca).

Anybody in the computer know (i'm sure your out there!) and could shed some light would be appreciated. My OH reckons they may have some kind of filter which may prevent us from sending - what do you reckon?

If need be I could resort to sending it by fax but since I've finished work today and it's now Friday it wouldn't go until Monday.

HELP! I'm being driven nuts and my phone buill is gonna be skyhigh at this rate.

Do the emails have any attachments that might contain viruses? Or do they contain hyperlinks? When I used to work for the Feds, emails like that were blocked.

They likely don't allow attachments with names ending .exe .zip .doc and so on. Can you send your resume as a .pdf ?

Rather than just filtering the attachment types perhaps the gov IT gurus are blocking any email which even contains reference to resumes, unless its going to an HR type?

My employer routinely blocks email containing a whole bunch of keywords. One that caught me out was "mortgage" as I was emailing back and forward to sort that out. Never got anything through the filter.

Just a thought.

I've been on the Gov site and it allows you to apply online and attach resumes to the mail. There is no mention of resume in the header or my mail and the file isn't an .exe or .zip file although is a word .doc.

May try the .pdf route. Anyone know how to convert a .doc to a .pdf file? Though I was fairly computer literate - how bad am I.

If you dont have full adobe acrobat to do it there is a freeby program called cutepdf you could google for.

Sounds weird. You dont think they would use an IP filter to filter out non canuk applicants? Is there any title line?. A lack of title can also trigger filters.

You could also save the Word document as .rtf (rich text format), that might work. Another issue though, if you're sending it to a government department they're likely to actuallly print it; have you checked that it'll print nicely on the paper size used here? (Not sure what it is, I never print anything, but it is different from that used in the UK).

One other thing is that I have tried to send a test email with no attachments at all and this has since come back ????

In that case, I can only think of two possibilities. One is that you have got the email address wrong. The other is that you have an infected computer and you're mailing out a virus.

Sounds like they have anti spam software, and if you are not in there address book then your emails are returned. I have had this problem here in the states too. Police and other government agencies all seem to have this software nowadays to cut down on spam and email virus attacks.

Another possibility is they don't accept applications from outside Canada. Government offices generally won't hire anything except Canadian citizens who reside in Canada, so why take application emails from other countries?

Hi
From my families experience e-mailing CV's may be a waste of time they some times they are just deleted without being opened. When you arrive take it in, in person chat to people, here every thing evolves around networking. Work is also difficult to get. You really have to force your self on employers, chase the jobs they wont chase you. When you send applications follow them by a phone call this may help.

Who exactly is it that you are trying to email? Can you put the email address up on here so perhaps someone could see if you have the correct one or not?

Are you trying to email a Federal Government department in Alberta or are you trying to email an Alberta Government office?

What's the exact error message you're getting? That should tell you the problem :)

If you're not sure, maybe you can copy and paste it here - removing the person's name though.

I know we have no virus's as my OH is rather hot on checking these and have had no other trouble sending to other sites. The address is correct as it is on the City of Red Deer site and automatically issues an email with it's address. I have contacted by phone and the lady there is a bit of a mechanical robot who it seems reads from a sheet. We did manage to get out of her that she does receive mails from (Resumes) Oz etc. but she wasn't sure about UK. Asked her to get their IT to look into it.

We have now reached a brick wall it seems with this one. My only alternative would be to mail a friend in Red Deer and ask her to try forwarding on our behalf.

Anyone wanna try and send a mail as a test?

I have tried other email addresses given by their human resources to no avail. Get same replies. ????

Longshot here.
You using hotmail or aol? Lots of organisations automatically deny emails from those sources.

Have you tried copy and paste? I've had agencies tell me they can't read my resume because WordPerfect won't translate (or whatever), to Word? I now copy and paste into the body of the e-mail, rather than send as an attatchment :D

Hi Alison, I remember you PM'ing me a few weeks ago....and you found this job for your OH straight away. Sorry to hear you've been struggling to get his Resume to them. I see the job is still being advertised and seeing as you're having such problems emailing it, try the fax route and then follow up with another phone call to see if they received it ok.....if the faxed copy is suffice for them, then you won't need to bother with the email hassle.

Best of luck with this job though, all finger's crossed and hope it works

Long time no speak. How are you?
As I guess your probably well aware, nothing in Canada seems urgent. Everyone seems sooo laid back and when someone says "yep - I'll email those details to you right now" - what they mean is give us a few days or a week. I have faxed a copy of OH resume to Red Deer a little while ago due to fact that we had so many problems emailing it. I regularly scan the HRSDC job bank to see whats available and this week they have advertised the very same vacancy. I thought maybe they were trying to fish further afield and they have also extended the time limit?? I have since spoken to the HR department and she said she would find his resume and resubmit it. We sort of say to ourselves "Yeh right". If all else fails then when we come in the Spring we will be able to talk to someone up front. The crazy thing is there seem to be loads of jobs in his particilar field and we have been told that due to the ageing population in this trade are having real difficulties filling posts and the fact that some of the younger ones seem to be disappearing to Florida.

We have had some good results from a large company in BC who as promised sent Matt trade booklets/health & safety manual/techniques and wanted his feedback and said to keep in touch, which they have. Although NO JOB OFFER yet! Why is it everything seems to move in slow motion. We have discovered some of their methods are pretty prehistoric but I reckon thats maybe a good thing as he could help them move forward if willing.

I'll stop rambling now wouldn't want to send anyone to sleep.

I'm no expert (I use a Mac *because* I don't care for technical stuff :D ) but it looks like your domain is blocked, probably a spammer has been using it/faking it?

Can you send from another domain? Or get in touch with the reddeer.ca admin people and ask them to take yours off the blacklist?

I just tried to send to the address you gave and think it's fine, well, I haven't received an undeliverable message and it's been over 30mins so I'm assuming it's fine.

Mine has gov.bc.ca after it...but anyone sending resumes to the Feds has to do it through the site enbedded in the relatively new revamped online application process. Anything coming from outside Canada is routinely filtered and bounced.
