Elementary school St Albert

Hi everyone!

We’re moving to St. Albert from the UK soon and starting to look into schools for our daughter who’s 10 years old (Year 5). We’re excited, but a bit overwhelmed with how the school system works up there.
We’ve heard a bit about designated schools and catchment areas, but we’re not sure exactly what rules apply for newcomers — especially those arriving from overseas. A few specific things we’re curious about:

Are children generally required to attend a designated (local catchment) school based on where we live?

If so, how strict is this rule — can we choose a different public school if we want?

Are there registration timelines, documents, or proof of residence requirements we should prepare before arriving?

We’d really appreciate advice from parents who’ve been through this, or anyone who knows about the St. Albert public school systems.

Thanks in advance!

Bart

I have no idea about the system however they do have a website and you can contact them for further information.

This info is from a local realtor who probably want your business but seems like relevant info

Thank you very much for the links — that’s really helpful. We’ll take a look at the school website and the other information you shared.

Much appreciated for pointing us in the right direction.😊

Things to know before completing a new student registration form

  1. A New Student Registration Form is completed for someone who is not currently enrolled in a St. Albert Public School.
  2. Before starting a registration form, know which is your neighbourhood school, and which program you wish your child to attend.
  3. The registration form is to be completed by the student’s parent/legal guardian. According to the Education Act, a parent is the guardian as set out in Section 20 of the Family Law Act. An appointed guardian is defined under Part 1, Division 5 of the Child, Youth and Family Enhancement Act or Section 23 of the Family Law Act.
  4. Along with the registration form, documents are required to prove the student’s legal name, date of birth and Canadian citizenship status. Documents to prove name, age and citizenship may include:
    • Canadian Citizens:
      • Canadian Passport
      • Canadian Birth Certificate
    • Non-Canadian Citizens:
      • Permanent resident card
      • Valid temporary resident papers (may be required for both students and parents)
      • Valid immigration papers (may be required for both students and parents)
  5. All required forms must be submitted and your chosen school must confirm acceptance before your student’s registration is complete.
  6. Once a registration form is submitted, you must contact the school to make changes to your information.
