Hi
If we bring our PC to Canada from the UK will it work OK if we use a special plug adaptor? Someone told me that this may not be the case. I would appreciate your advice please

If it is a desktop, look at the back near to where the power cord goes in for a little switch that goes between 110V and 220V. You should have one and when you come to Canada you just switch it to 110V and buy a cheap plug adapter or new lead, no more than 10 bucks.

If it is a laptop then almost certain to have a dual voltage adapter, but look at the label on the bottom of the adapter (not the laptop) to make sure it says 110V-220V input. Again then all you need is a new lead or plug adapter.

Just in case anyone is wondering, the above only applies to computers which are almost always built to work on both voltages (with the switch). Many other electrical and electronic items are not the same in which case you will have to buy some form of transformer.

Or just buy a new PSU and exchange.

Note that a lot of PCs don't have switches anymore, but just auto-sense the voltage and adjust accordingly. There may be a plate on the back telling you what voltage it supports.

Otherwise, PC power supplies are pretty standard, so in most cases for $50-100 you can buy a 110V PSU, remove the old one and install the new one; if you're even remotely competent with a screwdriver and electric cables it's about a ten minute job.

Oh yeah, and I think I paid about $2.95 for a new 'kettle lead' to plug in my dual-voltage monitor to a Canadian power socket. Of course no-one seems to know what a 'kettle lead' is over here :).

hi was wondering if anyone knows where to get a good transformer as i just got a xbox for xmas and would really want to take it with me voltage says 200 240 same as a few of my other items i want to take laptop is fine 100 240 v am i better off waiting till i get to canada then getting transformer or getting one in the uk before i go ?? thanks for your help :):):):):)

In Toronto you can get any type of transfomer at the House of 220 on Gerrard St in Little India. If you're not going to Toronto this is no help but what do I know?

I'm not really sure what an xbox is but if it's some sort of TV related applicance you likely have bigger problems than the voltage.
