Default Electrical goods from Ireland - are they working?

Hi!

Just wondering what to bring and what not to bring...we will leave most of our electrical goods behind but would want to bring a laptop and DVD player - will they work fine in Canada using an adapter?
I think the DVDs from here wont be working on a Canadian DVD player (??) therefore we were thinking of bringing our own as most important Thomas the Tank DVDs need to be played at all times:-)

Thanks for any replies!

Laptop no problem - just buy a new mains lead. You can buy a multi-region DVD player for about $30. Why bother with a transformer?

Thanks @JonboyE - I have never heard of a Multi region DVD player...does that mean it plays DVDs from various countries? That would be great...where would I get one of those?

Thanks!!
