My Mum spent 6 months with us up until 18 months ago. At the time she was 83... Whilst she was here she had a stroke and went to outpatients in an ambulance. She then had several visits to specialists.
The value of her treatment was in excess of $6000.
She was insured with Globe Link - cant quite remember the address but they're near Cambridge I think.

Anyway when we applied for the policy, we confirmed she had high blood pressure and was taking tablets and had high cholesterol also controlled with tablets. Otherwise she was generally fit.

The insurance paid up and covered the whole claim. The premium had been approx 600GBP for the six months...

Might be worth giving them a call?

When my mum was alive Age concern wanted 6K to cover health on a visit to Canada. At the time the lowest quote ~500GBP was from the post office.

In the end she found out that by taking out a credit card with her bank (Natwest), she was covered for travel health insurance for about 100 GBP.

Credit cards don't usually cover anyone over 65.

Also have to consider exactly what it covers ie per existing conditions, deductibles, repatriation. I am very skeptical about 'cheap' insurance cover.

what about the post office for insurance,,,also seem to remember RBS doing insurance if you hold an account.

I'm pretty sure the PO will not insure over 80's. When you reach 65 some insurance companies will not insure you...more drop over 70's...75's and so on. As you get older it gets increasingly more difficult...I had an heck of a job finding a company to insure my MIL. If your meds change or if you see a doctor after taking out the policy...but before travelling you must inform the insurance company. One dropped my MIL because the doctor had changed her blood pressure meds a couple of months before travel.

I agree, I think insurance for folks in their 70's is doable, but once you get over 85 it sky rockets, so there is hope for the OP. We have come to terms with the fact my mother will never visit again and will have to make the most of my MIL visits.

Looking at this from the reverse side, it has started to dawn on me, a bit late I know that my husband and I will get caught out with this, not being able to visit "home" or getting cut off from visiting our kids if they choose to move to far reaches of the globe. I am fanatical about travel insurance and won't go anywhere without it.

I have mentioned to both our kids that the world is a wonderfully huge place to explore but for goodness sake think very carefully about where you put roots down in relation to keeping your family in tact, clearly not something I did when I got on the plane and left! I often wonder when I read the threads of folks coming over for a "better life" if they realize the complications and expense they will most certainly face as the years pass, not only for themselves but for those they love they leave behind.

Just a little bit of an update ... apparently my mil got insurance through the post office (she's 91). She cancelled her original insurance with Age Concern and saved herself 50% - eventually paying just over £320.

My brother in law went through the policy and it provided excellent coverage.
