Hello All

I am sure this has been done before but can somebody just give me a quick recap.

We all pay EI premiums which are deducted at source from our pay, but the lads at work have been told that you cannot claim EI if you are on a TWP or a PR. Is this correct.

Dunno about TWP but PR's certainly can.

Just dont expect EI to be there, always plan for it not to be available.

Generally those on TWPs dont meet the criterea, although I read somewhere (here?) that some long term WP holders qualify.

EI for PRs is not a problem at all

I'm a TFW on a closed permit (can only work for employer stated on visa). I have been in Canada for 2 years and paid my EI like everyone else does. I was laid off this year as the company is folding. I applied for EI and started receiving payments 6 weeks later. There is a debate about this on the Trackitt site. It seems that eligibility depends on which province you are in, although to me that sounds very wrong. I am in Alberta.

True but not sure any of us plans for it. It is just a fact of life in the current Climate.

You are eligible as long as you have done a certain amount of hours - I am not sure what the actual amount is mind - but it is generally more than 3 months worth of 40 hour a day working.

You can also claim for EI as sickness benefit if you don't get this from your employer.

40 hours a DAY?!?! I know that the work week tends to be a bit longer here, but...........!
Seriously though, the hours thing depends on where you are. As I understand it, in areas of higher unempolyment, less hours are needed, but not a lot less. Where I am is about 800 hrs or so.

LOL we do like our work out here in NS...

If you click on the link below that rather silly post I added earlier - it shows you how many hours you need for each region.
