AH now I thought that the GTA was actually a single administrative district whilst the areas you have included in Calgary Metro area comprised at least two distinct admin districts. Am I wrong?

The GTA is not one district. I'm not sure where one would say the GTA ends but even a narrow definition includes Mississauga, Vaughn (sp?), Hamilton and Oshawa, all of which are technically cities.

Yes, Mississauga has a council, a Mayor, different tax rates and so on but it's part of the GTA; the airport is there. The same is true of the other places listed as well as Brampton and a bunch of others. That's why you can't get a bus across town but have to keep changing from Mississauga transit to Toronto transit to Markham transit and so on.

Don't fret!!

We are in the exact same boat as you. We go to Toronto in August. Our flat sold within a couple of days and we will need to live with relatives for a month before we fly out.

As for the money back on your flights - PLEASE be careful!!! Check when you book the flights...... I booked charter flights with BA and was not allowed to cancel them (different destination) but the principle was the same....... no refund. The net effect was that we travelled with a spare seat beside us....... we couldn't even transfer the tickets to someone else!

Hamilton is 65 KM from Toronto and is more than a city technically and with a population of more than 400,000. It is really a city as is Oshawa.

Go for it!
Alberta is so desperate for workers, you will both 'walk' into a job.
What do you both do?
Make sure you get almost the $ equiv as Pounds, (they WILL pay)
i.e if you earned 20# /hr, get $40)
and get LOA (living allowance) Alberta is booming and therefore expensive.

How is Hamilton more of a city than Mississauga ? They're both part of Toronto's urban sprawl, they both have commuter train service into town, they both have local authorities with limited jurisdiction over municipal matters. They're joined by concrete with no grass between them. To the untrained eye GTA is from the west end of Hamilton to the east end of Oshawa up at least as far as Canada's Wonderland. Last night I even heard someone complain that the 404 extension was going to make her farm on Lake Simcoe part of the GTA.

Great that you sold up so quickly - but beware of parting with all your furniture, even if it does sound tempting. Furniture over here is inferior and horribly expensive. I wish we'd brought more, but we have decided to limit the big stuff and opted to buy second hand furniture (there are loads of places in this area) and garage sales are great. I would recommend you bring as much as your can - it's amazing how your money will gallop out of your pocket on stuff you don't think about - like those kitchen utensils, mixing bowls, pots, pans and cutlery. My husband laughed at me because I even packed my favourite wooden spoon and garlic press. I've moved to Canada twice and each time done it differently - the first time we brought nothing except small items - so I learned the expensive way!

ahh.... "Calgary" is the buzz word here right now..... LOL

Actually 'out here' in the east it does seem that everyone is talking about going out west.....or at least the ones fed up with their current lot. i saw they were having recruitment drives for supermarket workers in the atlantic area!!! Even my neighbour, who is completely quebecois, was whining the other night about his job, started to go on about how we should be moving out to Calgary!!!
