Hi we are moving to Vancouver can anyone tell me how long after leaving high school in Canada does it take to get a Batchelors Degree and can you go to university direct from high school. What age do you leve high school?

I am a bit confused as here in england you finish school at 18 after doing your a levels and then go on to university and you finish when your 21/22.

Hi, you can go to Uni straight from high school. The way you get a degree is a little different. Rather than the course being set out for you, you choose different modules each term and the credits you get for them add up to your degree. You declare your major at the end of the second year (or later) and there are some required courses depending on your major. My daughter is doing criminology, and it is a 4 year programme, but it can take longer if she chooses to do fewer courses one term.

You can go straight from high school to university.

Many locally based colleges offer courses that count for credit for a university degree. Degree courses are four years but it is quite common for a child to take the first year of their university degree at a local college. It keeps the cost down a bit as the child lives at home for the year an acts as a transition between school and full university life.

In Vancouver students graduate high school in June of the year they are 17 turning 18.

They begin first year university in September that same year (3 months after graduating high school) and, if they do things normally, they'll graduate with their Bachelors degree in April, four years after they graduated from high school (the year they are 21 turning 22).

And yes, if they took the right courses in high school and got high enough grades in the those courses, they can be accepted straight into university. There is no equivalent to A levels in Canada - it's automatically built into the high school curriculum in the latter grades (10, 11, 12). How well you do in your classes in grades 10, 11, and 12 (and what classes you take) determine how eligible you are for university and what degrees you can pursue.

Ex: A high school student who received 86% or higher in Chemistry 12, Physics 12, Biology 12, Maths 12, Calculus 12 will likely be accepted into Bachelors of Science, but a student who only focused on arts courses (History 12, English 12, Geography 12) will not be able to get into Bachelors of Science, but will be able to pursue Bachelors of Arts, etc.
