Hwy 2 in Winter! Well its kept pretty clear but does get a bit icy in places, there are times when they have to close it completly because of ice, having said that I have had no probs at al commuting to Leduc, I think most of the probs arise because people drive too fast. Some people seem to think that 4 X 4 truck means invicable, I see a few of them in the meridian! (central reservation!) I have a truck too, but I just drive slower! So yes definatly doable! Ponoka is a small town, the prices are resonable. close enough to the city to have that convenience available! You could pick up a nice acreage here for the price of a house inthe city, and the Ponoka stampede in June is fab! Lacombe, bigger town about 10 to 15 mins south of Ponoka is also nice and growing bigger quickly, at least 3 golf courses that I know of nearby! Hope this helps!

Thanks for the response! We went out for a drive today to have a look at various towns around RD. We couldn't believe how warm it was in Sylvan Lake + 14!!! Lovely!
Anyway, looks like we will be looking to buy in RD, Lacombe or Ponoka. Depends on where we find the right house, I guess :)
What's Ponoka like in regards with playschools and activities for kids under 4?

Thanks, Ruby! We have got a realtor here in Edmonton, but I am not sure if he will be willing to show us around Red Deer. I will definitely ask your advice in case we need to get ourselves a new realtor !! Thank you !

Your welcome! A guy I work with lives in Lacombe and he loves the place, won't live anywhere else, but saying that, I guess we all praise the areas we live or else we wouldn't be there paying our mortgages every month eh!! I'm terribly biased though and would put Red Deer and where I live (Springbrook) over anywhere else!! :D

Another place worth considering would be Blackfalds - 10 mins from Red Deer towards lacombe. Again another place that has seen huge expansion in the past couple of years. We have looked at a few places in Lacombe we quite like the town but prefered not to have to commute to Red Deer for jobs.

Sylvan lake is great in the summer - Gull Lake a few minutes away is also really nice if you want a less crowded day at the beach without the shops that encourage 'I wanna Ice Cream, I wanna Burger, I wanna blow up thing!'

We have a four year old and there is a play group called Little Critters that we are looking into, sounds really nice, the lady who runs it phoned us and we will probably get our girl into that. We were put on to it by our realtor! They seem to know everyone! Anyway I have lived in Spruce Grove, Terwilligar (Edmonton) and Summerside (Edmoton) Also spent 3 months in Lethbridge! I like the small town the best, as long as I am not so far into the boonies that I cant have the city convenience! Sylvan Lake is great in the summer, its the closest to a beach front you can get near here! Its got a small waterpark, lots of places that sell ice scream aand some lovly looking houses, expensive for them though!

Yeah, Sylvan Lake is gorgeous. Spoke to some locals though, they all seem to hate summer time - the town becomes a party capital of Alberta, drunken youngsters everywhere, noise, etc..... Apparently, locals can't get to do anything because of the tourists.... So, I guess, as much as I like it there - there will be too much stress in the summer...
Surprised you didn't like Summerside, such a lovely area. Pricey though, that's the only downside....
