Without wishing to rain on your parade, such a job in Canada would likely be a Federal Govt job and generally you have to be a Canadian Citizen to stand any hope of getting one of those.
You generally need 10 years traceable history to work for most Federal Govt jobs as I had issues hiring immigrants who had been in Canada less than 10 years. I was able to get a Federal Govt job due to my previous UK Nuclear security vetting which was accepted by the Canadian nuclear security vetting agency. If you have security clearance i.e secret, its worth getting a copy and contacts of the UK vetting agency i.e OCNS for nuclear security(UK) before moving to Canada. I agree generally Federal Govt jobs are for Canadians and not new immigrants. Reading SteveP post it look like Canada has lost twice as many jobs as the UK per head of population. It looks like both Canada and the UK are going into recession. TAX specialists/auditors are those so called "inflation proof" jobs as companies try to maximise returns and minimise taxes. hudd |

Seems like it is a mixed picture throughout the country according to this for jobs:

I think the colors are slightly misleading on this map. Red means UN-employment went down.

Even at that generally the rate of unemployment is higher east of Manitoba.

It's hard to tell how 'bad' things will be in the summer but it would be best if you can get a job offer when still in the UK, as the previous poster advised. It makes things much easier once you get here.
I check BBC news and I read about companies laying off staff almost everyday. Maybe these kind of news aren't covered by the media here in Canada but I don't see it to be as bad as in the UK right now. That's my personal opinion though. Canada isn't immune - it's going to get very bad here, as bad as the UK probably. What will be different is the length of time the recession lasts; Canada will come out earlier as it has a fair amount of commodities to sell. |

Thank you all for your feedback so far.
Once we get our PR, we are planning to come over for a reccie in April/May time. We are both quite cautious, so we would not move out permanently without one of us securing a job. I earn less that Ant, so I would consider the possibility of going over first & trying to find something whilst he works in the UK. Ant is a tax specialist/ fraud investigator/ auditor and currently works for the UK government - a secure job in these times. (We have got our PR through him) He would like a similar role in Canada, but cannot apply for such jobs until we have landed & have our SINs. I work as an Project Manager for a Market Research firm, but I have years of admin/Executive Assistant experience & would consider any secretarial/ office work. Why do you know anyone who is hiring? (Cheeky?!) Sammy www.workopolis.com www.monster.ca www.jobbank.gc.ca Good Luck! Keep your UK house if you can until you are settled here |

Most positions are based upon the result of sitting an exam for that department in addition to an interview. I have many friends who work in the government and have been witness to the hiring procedures - the biggest problem as a newly landed immigrant would actually be one of time as getting a fed job can take up to a year!
Preference is given by virtue of this Act to Canadian citizens. CRA are not hiring at the moment anyway: http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/apps/career...Y09-Index.html If Ant is a current HMRC employee, check his external accounting qualification (not in-house) is acceptable. Last time I looked, CRA were demanding a CGA equivalent at minimum. He cannot do the job you he does now in Canada without an externally recognised qualification. If you have this - great. |
