Driving test on visitors visa

Can someone please advise whether it is possible to take driving lessons and test whilst here on a visitors visa, awaiting common law sponsorship pr. I know you cannot work or attend college, but can you take a driving test. I haven't been able to find the answer to this question and hope you good folks may know.

The answer may depend on your province.

There shouldn't be an issue in BC. They just need to have sufficient ID documents (and Canadian government issued ID is preferred).

Thanks ESarge, the province would be Alberta, and Calgary in particular.

actually it is an issue in BC. the rule is that you can't hold a BC license unless you are legally resident in BC for a period of longer than 6 months with no gaps. this discounts visitors unless you get an extension. not sure about Alberta...

I think Canadian government issued ID is mandatory. If you are a visitor on a visa waiver you would not be able to apply for a driving license.

Not quite sure where you get this from. Most foreign licenses (i.e. UK) are only valid for 90 days, so under this scenario you'd be SOL for driving. New residents in BC must get a license within 90 days.

Visitors can drive on their home licenses for 6 months, PR 90 days. Suggest you read http://www.icbc.com/driver-licensing...riables._frag_

Can anyone tell me how long I can drive on my UK licence in Manitoba. I am here on a visitors visa for 6 months. Do I have to exchange my licence after the 90 days

No your OK as you are a visitor for 6 months, and I think you can reset that by going over the border to the USA.

Does not apply if you are a resident though, either PR or TWP.

Look again, suggest you re read my post, I said 'Residents' must get their license within 90days, a visitor is not a resident. This was in reference to a post that stated one had to be resident for 6 months before getting a license, which is incorrect. The original post was asking if you could get a license, not how long an overseas license was valid.

You may want to re read the page you linked to.
