So if you are hoping to do the test in a rental car then you need to see if the rental company will give you the originals.
I think it probably depends on the examiner - but might save some time if you can get them - or arrange an alternative if not I don't believe an examiner will exercise discretion when it comes to making sure the car they're being driven around in by a novice driver has appropriate insurance documentation or not. |
Re: Driving test in a rental?
Aparently budget do.
http://britishexpats.com/forum/showt...est+rental+car Shame I didn't find this post before as I was to late to go to their office get car, and be back in time for test. |
Re: Driving test in a rental?
i used a driving instructor's car;
i took a few hours lessons to get used to driving on 'the wrong side' and to gain insight of those little rules and peculiarities (not to mention the likely test route and structure). the cost of the car for the test was based upon time as if it were a lesson.... which took it into the 5 hour bulk rate discount (ca-ching) oh and i passed incidentally. |
Re: Driving test in a rental?
thanks yes I went out for an instruction today. The were a few times when I thought "oh I didn't know that".
Anyway big day tomorrow :fingerscrossed: |
Re: Driving test in a rental?
Pretty certain that 5 years ago in PEI (when tests were still required for Brits) that we took our tests in a rental as you couldn't GET insurance until you had a Canadian licence.....

Re: Driving test in a rental?
Just been to get our Ontario Licences and I am blown away how easy it was:thumbup:
No drivng test :D No knowledge test:D It was so easy. Two forms of ID, an eye test with a completed form and photo taken and BINGO I have my licence. I was advised that because Canada have a reciprocal agreement with UK we didnt need to do anything but do a straight swap:rofl: Just wondering why others have to do a driving test  |
Re: Driving test in a rental?
Coz I am a crap driver. :p
Nah (well maybe) , It seems to be province specific. I think you had to do a test in BC up until fairly recently, but can now do a swap there also. |
Re: Driving test in a rental?
until very recently, there was no reciprocity between the UK and BC.
and now, you still need to have held your UK license for over 2 years to qualify for a swap! at the end of last year, i took the second BC test (only) due to having held a UK license for freaking decades. i was pleased to pass, but less pleased to see my new BC license is good for only about 2 years, after which i have to stump up over 70 bucks to get it renewed (with another test...?) |

You were advised incorrectly. Each province and territory has it's own rules with regard to reciprocal arrangements with other countries. Some require a re-test, some don't. Some will swap a car licence, but not a motorcycle, some both. I'm not aware of any that will swap an HGV licence.
Having read the follow ups I had already assumed it must be a province thing. ;) |

Nope no test - I asked at ICBC why did they only give me 18months on my licence when I passed - they said it was standard practice in case I left the province and that at renewal I would get the usual 5 yr one - bloody money grabbing, . . . . :frown: |

This isn't strictly true, you can go to the post office in the UK and apply for an international driver's licence for about 5 pounds which allows you to drive for a year over here.
As ever, these are provincial rules and it may be different elsewhere. |
