if you are becoming resident then you need to swap your UK licence for Ontario one.
if you've been driving for more than two years it is simply a case of , go to Service Ontario place
take eye test
hand over cash
get license

I recall there being a time limit, someone else with a better memory will reply I'm sure

Someone will correct me if Im wrong no doubt, but Im pretty sure that the IDP is required by visitors only if your license is not issued in either of the official languages. (English and French)

Its basically a translation....

There was a hoo-haa about it recently after Florida started to require it of Canadian visitors (ie half the populations between December and May), and after a while they realized what it was supposed to be about and withdrew the law.

You can use your UK licence for 90 days... If you decide to stay in Ontario... you can exchange your licence for a Canadian one after a quick eye test...

You must bring both pieces of your UK licence ( paper part too )

Also I think you need to have held ( driven ) for 2 years in Uk to exchange otherwise you don't get a full licence here

Are you here working or visiting? If classed as a Temporary Resident worker/student then after 90 days you should be getting a driving licence for the province you reside in.
All provinces have differing rules re swapping over licences but based on where you reside i.e living as opposed to working in. Some live in one province but work in another.

Incorrect.

When you move to Ontario, you can use a valid licence from another province, state or country for 60 days. After 60 days, you need to switch to an Ontario driver’s licence.

Hello, newbie here! I'm wondering, when you go to "exchange" your licence, they don't actually take your British one off you do they?

You should keep a note of your driver number
If you go back to live in UK then you can get it back easily

To prove that I have held my licence for 2 years, is it sufficient to get a letter to that effect from the dvla?

Doesnt your licence indicate the year it was issued?
For insurance purposes letters from DVLA are not sufficient as you can hold a licence without being insured.

Re: Driving in Ontario

if you are asking because Ontario needs you to have had your licence for 2 years to get a full G licence then you don't need anything other than your licence.

if you are asking about proof of insurance, for a new policy then I think the wiki has some info on this
