driving license
With a full UK driving license , do you need to re-take the driving test again when you arrive Canada?
|
i think you've got 60 days but yes, you do.
|
Not in Quebec! You can buy a new licence which will give you cheaper car insurance but you don't have to take any sort of test.

Heh,
We lived in Alberta,99 - 01. Our full uk licences were exepted, just had to buy a Canadian, they last for 5 years. ( Just like an id card) so i guess you need to renew photo and all that gunf. Hope this helps. PS i've also got C+E and D+E but i couldn't use them !! |
terry,
yes we did have to get a new driving licence, its worth it ,eventually your car insurunce comes down(after 3 years i believe)so in the long run it is realy worth it. It wasnt much of a driving test anyway,I'dd have failed it in the uk if I'dd driven like I did,if you do fail you dont have to wait long to take the test again so do it and dont look back, your licence is like an identity card as well so you can go to blockbuster video ,great eh? john |
Originally posted by louisa i checked for alberta, it is also 90 days. Louise, where did you get this info from? My wife and i both lived in Alberta 1999 - 2001 all be it with the British Army. We just went to the local registration office and paid for a Canadaian Licence, we still have them! We did not have to take any form of tests. We produced our UK licences and proof of no claims bunus from the Uk. ( the No claims was for the insurance, not the licences) In Medicine Hat, there is a company called Thompsons & Thompsons they got us insurance through Lloyds of London and it was very cheap. I am asking this because we are trying to move back out soon so i hope things haven't changed in the last 2 years thanx Ted |
i got that from the new Alberta Drivers Handbook, this year's edition. my situation was different anyway, i lived in the states so had to take the test there so was able to swap it for an alberta one.
we used to have some canadian friends in the uk and they were able to use their Canadian licence to get a UK licence a few years ago so it seems like there may be this system that you have talked about. i just don't know that many people know much about it. i have found the registeries here to be a bit hit-and-miss, meaning that sometimes you go and get bad info, then if you go back in half an hour and speak to somebody else then it changes. if you still have your canadian licences then i'm sure it will be easy to renew. as for insurance, we would all love to hear about cheap insurance as it's very expensive now, even for canadians. |
