That's what I said:rofl: But as someone else mentioned, it's the revenue. They can be fined for not having a valid licence now, as well as being a crap driver.

edit: Actually, the local sentiment was that it would hopefully discourage "snowbirds" as well as Brits from the roads.

Sounds like whoever wrote the bill simply didn't include any exemptions for licenses already in English and as such now its just a blanket across the board requirement for all foreign licenses.

They made a mistake, Florida law already recognizes Canadian licenses specifically if you want to get a Florida licence, i.e. exchange it. Also Florida law also has a provision that allows Canadians to get a licence purely with proof of Canadian citizenship, although it is limited to one-year validity, unless you've got some sort of proof of permanent residency. They did that because of all the snowbirds who come down who only drive in Florida.

They said on the news it was a mistake. The law makers don't meet again till March, they say it will be changed by summer.

Unfortunately if you drive now without the permit you are risking being uninsured:frown:

I work next to a passport photo place and the lady in there has been busy all morning taking photos for the new permits - it is the busiest I have ever seen her.

An example please, of an insurance company, anywhere, declining a claim on this basis.

A fairly decent response by CAA after being inundated with applications for IDP

Strangest quote on there though............. While enforcement of this new law in Florida may not take place at least for now, we continue to recommend Canadians travelling to Florida in the next few days, to consider obtaining an IDP

I suspect this is because not all rental firms in Fla will have heard of the latest news..

It apparently violates a national law, which is why iit's been abandoned.

From what I read yesterday, not so many rental firms knew about the new law in the first place. I am wondering if Florida realized early on that they screwed up and that is why it was not publicized.
