Re: Dress code - want to fit in!!!
One of the joys of working in Canada, and working from home (even if I am an employee of a UK company) is that I can dress as casually as I want. Today, I am wearing a polo shirt, cut-off jeans and nothing else. It has been like that for about six weeks. Not the same clothes, obviously.
It struck me when I was doing the laundry a few days ago that two items I have not seen in the basket since early June are long trousers and socks. I'm not quite sure why I still keep 15 suits, dozens of shirts, ties and other stuff like that in my closet. The last time I wore any of them was last September, and that was only for an hour. |
Re: Dress code - want to fit in!!!
I personally think that its fine to dress how you want and if that is what people say Canadians do -- fine!! I just spent two weeks with my 60 year old sisters and just about all they talked about was whether their clothes came from Monsoon or Zara!! I figure Canadians have it right - who gives a shit what you are wearing so long as you are a nice person??
There are more important things to life than wearing fashionable clothes. So - go for it - wear whatever you darn well want and you will fit in. I wear socks under my sandals. If I am mowing the grass and don't want green feet; if the mosquitos are bad and I am gardening; if the weather is cold - I have Nike sports sandals and they are the most comfortable footwear for walking. I would rather wear my Nike sandals and socks on a cold day than have my feet crammed into runners. Besides which - I am a Canadian and I wear what I feel like and to heck with what people think!!! :) |

I want to fit in with the locals and not look like a typical tourist. Obviously I wont be wearing my usual work suits - so what kind of clothes are acceptable for this sort of thing? Will it still be very hot? Please advise for hubby and I!!! Thanks Bombards  |
Re: Dress code - want to fit in!!!
In preparation for the final move, I have already packed 6 cases of clothes for the family.
Having read all the replies, I am just about to unpack MOST of the clothes and donate them to the local hospice shop!!! Just don't make me shop at the local supermarket.. I am certainly NOT ready for that yet. Thanks Bombards ;) |

Both are of an identical make, and one is his old, and the other his new pair :scared: I really don't want to know what state his feet are in after a summer of +30's and wool socks :scared: :scared: |

Your Mileage May Vary! Last night I saw a man in a suit, here http://www.lamaquette.com/, I noticed him because I haven't seen another suit wearer for months. The word today is business casual, status within the firm is conveyed by the tag on your bum. Alas, apart from Polo being gay I can never remember which means what, is Perry Ellis the Wal-Mart brand, is Denver Hayes better than Dockers ? I'm sure there are whole magazines devoted to the matter. |

Have just gone into hubby's wardrobe and counted in excess of 20 ties! So, can I take it that I can throw away most of these then? ( He does actually wear most of these a the moment) Bombards |
Re: Dress code - want to fit in!!!
BUM is Wal-Mart's clothing brand. Apparently.
Says it all, really. |
Re: Dress code - want to fit in!!!
It seems obligatory to wear dungarees (men) if you're doing any strenous work. The really cool ones leave one strap undone a-la New Kids on the Block circa 1990.

Very generally, Canadians see fashion as a waste of time, energy and money. In this regard I'm very Canadian. I dress for comfort primarily and see fashion and brand consciousness as mostly mindless consumerism. Trinny and Susannah would have a hayday with me; in Vogue I'm the woman with the big red "don't" X across my pic - proudly. :D |

I have about 8 pairs of 501s that range in decrepitude from "smart-casual", through "good enough", to "Home Depot only", "arse/knees hanging out" and "cut down". My Mrs is no better. A typical weekend slob-about outfit would be: a pair of Tonny Hilfiger jeans bought for the Boy but which he hated and so they were given to me until judged to be a bit gay and thus nabbed by her (legs turned up and a belt worn); one of my plaid shirts; Birkenstocks now too small for Boy; quite possibly a pair of my boxers, if I've been lacking on the laundry front during the week. There, I did it. I outed myself and admitted to having a plaid shirt. Actually I have several. When CIC finally get around to summoning me for the citizenship test, I think I'll just send them a photo of my closet and say: "will this do instead?". |

Me too. It's also ecologically hostile because you finish up throwing away perfectly good clothes because they are now out of fashion. Anyone interested in some used Bell Bottoms, flowered shirts etc? |
