Dog Crate - help
 

Right i have measured my boarder collie to what the airline says and it means that she needs to go in a xl crate :curse:

Measurement is 39" length, 27" height and 16" wide
6in added to the length as per what the airline advises and width is 6" but doubled as to what the airline says.

is this right as this will be massive for a boarder collie to travel in, looked on websites and now totally confused.
i know it will be a few months before we travel, but i want to get it so that she can start getting used to it.

Any help on this from others who have shipped dogs and before anyone says it, yes she is coming...not an option here

I brought my own Border Collie over in August of 2004. She measured 84 Cms long, 72 cms high and 28cms wide. She was 14 years. Had to get a cage called an X2. This box was nearest to my dogs size and measured (LXWXH)112X56X84 cms. The seemingly large size is to ensure the dog has room to stand up, turn within the cage and lie down comfortably. the cage weighed 18 Kgs and cost £93.00 then.

I would be grateful if you could send me some literature - as we have a Cocker Spaniel.

We travel in July and are currently looking at crates but to be honest we are a bit lost as to what size/type/make to buy

they also need to get used to it for a while as well ;)

We have been told plastic and airplane approved..
the ones they do on the link are good, but delivery is expensive, plus london based....anybody know where i can get one in lancashire :eek:

Yes, thats right. The crate is of top and bottom halves. I placed the dogs bed into the bottom half for a few weeks then placed the top half on leaving the door off. If traveling I placed the cage in the back of my car and she travelled in the cage, but with the door closed. after a few weeks of sleeping/travelling in the cage she was not phased at all by it.

By the time the big day arrived the trip down to Manchester in the cage within the car was second nature to her. Was a little unsettled at having to stay in there when we arrived at the airport but at least the cage and bedding etc was familier to her. She made the trip over with no ill effects .

Airpets make them to order and deliver to the airport. Ours was waiting at Air Canada Cargo and we put the dog in and on the plane with no fuss. No ill effects either.

only thing with that is that we will be flying from manchester and not london :confused:
and the taxi that takes us, well mini bus requires her to be in the crate, so i need to find one that fits her now and that she can used to it.

I know shed be happier sat on my knee for the flight, but i dont think theyd let her :lol:

Glad it worked out so well for you. However, in my own case, Shona was an outdoor dog, never kennelled or confined. She, at first did not like the cage at all ...almost as if she was being punished for something. Having it early doors provided time for her to get used to it and except it as part of her life...and that took her a few weeks or so.

As I say, glad it worked out for you but I would recommend that anyone contemplating a long flight with pooch get the cage early and start the familiarisation program in plenty of time prior to the flight. In my case, well worth the effort, for both me and my dog.:thumbup:

Thanks for that, we thought as she is just turning 8mths wed buy it in plenty of time for her to get used to it, as we have the house to sell as well, thought it would be a good place for her to hide :blink:

Hi Gill, I'd be very suprised if your boarder collie wouldn't fit in a Pet Cargo 800. You can see them here: http://www.seapets.co.uk/product-det...egory/193.html and the delivery is only 4.95! We bought 2 crates from them a couple of years ago and they were fantastic.

Thanks for that, just looked at that and neally fell of the settee :unsure:
wow they are expensive, but they look good, off car boot tomorrow so i think ill have the dog with me to have a look round, if not then ill be ordering one of the cargo 800 as i do like them....

carrier cost me £60 with 10% discount that i got for new order, ok you have to register with them, but hey my uk email account will be dead soon, so who cares, but the cheapest one we have found is £105 this morning and after doing more searching, found these guys.

I just bought 2 vari kennels from here on Friday and I found the prices very reasonable compared to other places i've checked, they have a HALF PRICE sale on at the minute. no harm in having a look.
