LOL. Luckily he didn't charge him any tax. We just had to sign to say it was personal possessions on the goods to follow list.

To answer the previous posters question, you just need to get:

The Defra certificate which covers the rabies bit (no vaccination needed). You fill in a form and send to Defra. They send the documentation to the approved chosen vet and they complete the form for you. Done no earlier than 10 days before flight

Then you have to have a fit to fly letter from a vet no more than 7 days before flight to satisfy the airline (can be done at same appointment as Defra form). Do not listen to Defra if they tell you its not needed. It is!

And book the flights through the Cargo department at chosen airline. For our circumstances (London to Toronto) we only had choice of Air Canada as Air Transat stopped flying them on 6th Jan until March. Air Canada have 4 flights a day and its a heated cargo hold.

You have to have an approved airline crate. Airpets sell a whole range of wooden crates which are always in stock. The crate for our German Shepherd was only £120 and it can be delivered straight to Cargo at Heathrow for £15 on the day of travel.

Put the dog on goods to follow list and take it with you to pick him up at customs. We had to pay $30 to customs and I think $55 handling fee to Air Canada Cargo in Toronto.

That about covers it learning from our experience!

Its worth the saving from what the agency's charge you.

Glad you have your dog safe and sound.

I flew my 8 dogs, 5 border terriers, 2 golden retrievers, and 1 dobe all on one flight with Air Transat on 24th November last year. It could not have gone better, all arrived safe and sound, the flight was on time....I did have a bit of fuss with customs as I had not put my dogs on the goods to follow list, but I got a great customs guy who sorted it all out for me and gave me a customs form to say that the dogs were customs cleared and that they were personal pets so no customs to pay. (It cost $68 to get that paperwork done), but I was just happy that all the gang arrived safe and well.

I then hired a cargo van and drove then to Carberry, Manitoba....now that was a trip and a half!! Two and a half days of travel.....long drive!
