Do we need our wardrobes???
HI there, sorry this is probably a really stupid question but I need to decide what to bring from the uk with us when we move in May/June time. We are planning to bring our beds but will this cause us a problem with canadian mattress sizes or should we buy new matresses and bring them with us. Also it appears that Canadians do not seem to use wardrobes preferring inbuilt ones so should we leave ours behind? We are planning to rent initially and will purchase a property once we have settled after a year we hope. Any other related advice would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Re: Do we need our wardrobes???
You should go and do a search in the immigration section, most of these questions are answered and similar things are discussed.
We didn't bring wardrobes, mostly they are built in. |
Re: Do we need our wardrobes???
As for matresses, a UK double is a Canadian double and a UK king is a Canadian queen, I would bring your beds and if your mattresses are good, those too, we wished we had (even if we were to used them as spares).
We have 4 bedrooms, each one has a built in wardrobe, so I wouldn't bring those necessarily, unless your going to use them as storage or something in the basement/garage, i'm saying that not knowing if they are precious antiques or run of the mill MFI type things so don't take offense. Canadian homes do tend to have adequate storage areas, I would bring sofas, dining table cooking utensils and stuff like that, even if it's to just see you through, it's a real pain starting from new, going around and around the stores trying to find something you like when everything is so different to the style your used to. |
Re: Do we need our wardrobes???
We brought a lovely triple solid wood new-ish wardrobe with us - thinking it would go nicely in the basement.
It doesn't fit. We couldn't get it down into the basement. It now languishes in the garage as a very posh ski and camping equipment holder. |
Re: Do we need our wardrobes???
I cannot remember the last time I saw a wardrobe in a furniture store, although I'm sure they're available somewhere other than Ikea. I do not know anyone who has a wardrobe. They are large, cumbersome and don't really hold that much. Leave them in the UK.

You had a duplicate thread so I merged them.

Re: Do we need our wardrobes???
If your wardrobe opens into a magical land of snow and fauns, I say, "Bring it!"
Otherwise, you're likely to have a built in closet in your bedroom! |

This WIKI article on mattress sizes should help... http://britishexpats.com/wiki/Bed_Sizes-Canada We brought our own bed/mattress from the UK and bought new for the spare bedrooms. Can we just check that your reason for NOT bringing your mattresses is nothing to do with the red herring about mattress fumigation (ie: it's just your personal choice not to bring them).
