Hope I'm not pointing out the obvious, but you do realise Red Deer is about 3 hours drive from Banff? Just thought I'd say.

Yep I know but better than being hundreds of miles away!!! Like most people say they don't often go skiing, even living in Calgary. It's just an area I like to visit while in Banff come Janaury.

I would of thought for the o/p that Vancouver would of been the ideal place?

These jobs links have been common knowledge on B.E and on Google search, along with JobBank, I'm very surprised the o/p hadn't known about this. She should also look at:

The main ones she has. I have many more but not for their field of work.

Hi there, and thanks for those links, much appreciated. OH has looked at pretty much all the sites (including those you mentioned) but it's getting a look in from this side of the Atlantic. So far, we've had nothing back from various leads but I guess that's pretty much the way it is if you are trying from the UK. Thanks though, we'll just keep plodding on and maybe, eventually, somebody will look at this credentials and think 'now there's the bloke we're looking for'. :fingerscrossed: :)

OK, didn't realise it has been that difficult for you all!

What about looking at something a little different until you bump into people in the know! Could it be that sort of job where you need to be known, or word of mouth? Remember some jobs aren't advertised. What's his title? I see what I can find from my friends, one guy in the medical industry. You may p/m me if you wish for extra details.

I must say it has been impossible getting a job from the UK, I hope it isn't the same once in Canada. So pleased o/h going first to find out. At least I can continue to earn and bring in one wage, will be tight!!!

"Food processing" is one of the largest industries in Alberta, although I think that's mainly a euphemism for "slaughterhouses". But there is more going on in the food industry in Alberta I think than BC.

A lot of people move here for winter sports but it is much colder here than BC during the winter.

Thanks for your input Steve....OH is in QA (rather more office based than hands dirty stuff), previous to that he worked in medical devices (stents and things of the like). I guess we've been focusing so much on BC because that's where we know (well, visited at least). It's hard to think of somewhere if all you've seen is the nice touristy bit (Jasper, Banff - and aren't those areas just stunning?!) but to live, work etc. is all unknown to us as we've never visited a major city there. I guess we could start off in BC and look at Alberta once we're a bit more familiar with Canada as a whole, although Canada changes so much from province to province!

It's so blinking hard....and it all rests on OH's shoulders, which is hard for him and hard for us to see him stressing about it. What we really need to do is win that elusive LOTTERY!! That'd sort us out, for sure.

Sorry to pick up this link, but this could be my story. Like Dotty P waiting for daughter to complete GCSEs having landed through Vancouver this summer. However, I am interested in your connection in the Medical Industry. This is field, I am a Medical Imaging Engineer - Xray equip etc. many years experience with a US company but I have had problems getting anyone to take up my application, and very poor response, if any. Any contacts you can recommend in this area would be fantastic?

Alberta is very different from BC contrary to some of the comments I see on here. In fact I'm hard-pressed to think of two cities in the same country that are as different from each other as Calgary and Vancouver, given that the distance between them isn't that great. Even fairly basic things like the tax system and car insurance are substantially different.

From what my O/H was saying you needed your Red Seal for fitting the medical equipment. This person was interested on employing my O/H but he turned it down because it didn't pay very well and it was a lot of travelling, including overseas.

But anyway if I can get the contacts that'll be a start.

We have found better paid work in Alberta and consider it a good start, inlcuding being near the mountains and brighter days! It's not quite the place I want to be long-term, but you have to start where the work is. BC is lovely but I don't like the wet stuff and having dull days like the UK. Oh and would make me feel nervous living on the fault line, what's to come????????? Oops this might stir up a debate.

Reading about your efforts to come to Canada makes our experience over 47 years ago look positively effortless.

In January of 1963 I was getting bored in my job and was looking in the Sunday Telegraph employment section and came across this advertisement stating that "Winter in Canada is exhilarating". We were going through one of the worst winters for years and asked the wife if she would like to go to live in Canada. Up until then we had never thought of immigrating, but decided to write to this company in Ottawa just to see what they had to offer.

I'll cut it short and say that I had a reply and in February, got an interview in London and had a job offer a few weeks latter. They arrange all the paper work and sent us tickets for the Cunard Carmania. I had to sell the house so we didn't get to Canada until the 7 July 1963. Been here in Ottawa ever since and retired in 1992.

We were accidental immigrants.

Oh if only it were that simple!! It seems nowadays that not only is gaining a visa a long haul but even when you get it still feels like treading treacle. Still, like I've said before, nobody said it would be easy (although I didn't think it would be this difficult!). Hopefully we're made of tougher things and will get there in the end!! We have just got to keep smiling!
