How could I have forgotten Red Green in my list. He taught me everything I know about marital harmony!

I'm yet to be convinced. Canadian comedy is a bit like british cars in the 70's - yeah they sometimes get the job done, but it's hardly the best experience.
Anyway - I'm surprised nobody has mentioned these two comedy geniuses

Will Sasso, Harland Williams, Tom Green, John Candy, Dan Aykroyd, Jim Carrie, Mike Myers...Most of my favourite comedians are Canadian, followed by Scottish, Billy Connelly.
I don't think the Canadians are missing a sense of humour...they just seem a little more reserved than the people I'm used to...us Northern Irish say we we think, even if it'd rude, so I guess we're more outspoken, whereas the Canadians keep it to themselves more.

Is it not a little hypocritical for an expat / wannabe expat to criticise some sucessful canadians for moving south in pursuit of better paying contracts / more professional fulfillment etc?
Im pretty sure most of them maintain canadian connections anyway and still own property / spend time here.

About as hypocritical as BE members here in Canada complaining that Canada is being taken over by immigrants

I think the thing that makes Canadians funny is that we think we are a lot more clever and funny than we actually are, and everyone else knows it

" How do you get 300 Canadians to leave the swimming pool????"
simply say..."will you please leave the swimming pool"
do Canadians have a sense of humour??? I think its up for a fair debate. while they laugh frequently and have a giddy wide eyed hash induced view of things its really bizarre actually getting them to understand British humour
How many times have we heard after telling something amusing to our Canadian colleagues..... "Oh that is soooo ferneeeeee!!!" The response is to laugh then. Surely that is what you do after hearing something amusing and not saying its funny with that stone cold poker face
I guess we as English are very adept and fruitful with our humour. We are brought up on it from the old Knock Knock jokes to the complexity and the weird. In short we have the ability to laugh at ourselves.
Canadians seem to mis understand this and most certainly do not understand sarcasm
Now I know you will immediately shout " sarcasm is the lowest form of wit" but I feel that it is the highest form of politely taking self amusement by secretly pulling the fun from your host without them realizing it! Try it with anyone at the end of the telephone..especially people like ICBC and Terrason gas....its fun
So in being funny here in Canada here is a few tips to make the standard Canadian issue male roll on the floor with laughter.....
1 Mention the word "titties" pronounced "tiddies" in your jokes referring to womens breasts. That will have them roaring with adolescent laughter.
2 tell Englishman Irishmen and Scotsmen jokes from the 1970s and substitute a first nations person for the role of the Irishman it works a treat with the typical Canadian being as racist as hell to first nation people (does anyone else find that? its really not nice!)
3 hoop and hollow like a madman during the course of the joke raise your arm and shout American marine corps sayings like ...."HHHHHHHoooooorah! "
Does anyone else have any tips on tapping into a canadians regressed sense of humour??????

Well Ive got to say people that nearly all the Canadians I have met....well the ones i see on a social basis have got a very similar sense of humour - sarcasm being at the top of the list!! very much so! I think the difference is, is the fact I know them socially, if you try to be sarcastic with a Canadian in a proffessional situation they dont get it, as I think customer service is high on Canadians minds, its their culture, so if your sarcastic....they think your being serious.....as their mindset is not in that social relaxed mode....
A large proportion of the Canadian people I know socially are big fans of the best sit com of all time ..... Fawlty Towers ....now you dont get much more sarcastic than Basil Fawlty!! Perhaps Ive been lucky so far in the Canadians I have met.
Now Ive met Americans from time to time and most of them just dont get saracasm or irony in a proffesional or social situation. I say most, as some do.
However all that said, ive met my fairshare of Brits that just dont get heavy use of sarcasm. Like one other poster said - it differs regionally in the UK ive found that quite a lot.
I suppose its down to who you meet! and what your personal sense of humour is, Ive got a friend in the UK, where every other word he says is some sort of sarcastic dig at someone or something.....even took me a while to get used to that!
Horses for courses I suppose!
Paul
