Directional Drilling in Canada
 

Hi All

We are hoping to moveout to Canada but would really like to research the areas where there is Directional Drilling as that is my hubbys trade. The drilling he does is with utilities under roads, rivers motorways etc Does anyone have any advice about the better areas to look at for this kind of work?

suggest you look up www.yellowpages.ca. You can check out each province to see where relevant companies operate (by heading or company name or keyword), and that will give you a good idea. If oil is the main industrial application then Alberta is the province for you. Otherwise, there's a lot of housing and commercial development north of Toronto too, where utility companies continue to install underground lines, plus there is a Toronto plan to extend rail links from the downtown core at the lake, northwards.

Suggest you also read the BE Wiki article called Finding Job Opportunities.

But it's not good enough to find out the companies that hire people in your occupation. You also have to find out where there are labour shortages in your field. That's because, in order to gain entry to Canada, you have to be offered a job for which no qualified Canadian has applied.

Use the National Occupational Classification website to find out what your occupation is called in Canada. There are several occupations in which the word "driller" is in the job title. Find the job description in which the tasks are the closest fit with what you do.

I hope for your sake that you'll find an occupation that falls within Skill Level 0, A or B on the National Occupational Classification Matrix, because that would qualify you as a skilled worker. The broad category called 737 Crane Operators, Drillers and Blasters, for example, falls within Skill Level B.

Next, look at the lists of Occupations Under Pressure. I have not looked at all of them on your behalf, but I note that 7372 Drillers And Blasters - Surface Mining, Quarrying And Construction are on the OUP list for British Columbia, just by way of example.

Also read the four articles to which there are links on the main Canada page of the BE Wiki. If you are to gain entry to Canada, it is critical that you understand the contents of those articles.

Thats really helpfull, so excited about this adventure that becomes more and more like reality each day. The only reason we were looking at the areas is because we wanted to research som of the companies, local schools etc first just to be prepared but I will read up on all the lists that you have advised. Thanks for this, just had a look at the websites and have stored them all for future reference. They are exactly what we were looking for. My hubby is really happy now that all the equipment etc all looks familiar and his exact job description is on two of the job ads. Horizontal Directional Driller Locator. LOL - thats okay it made me laugh!

Had loads of info from the drilling websites postedon here so fingers crossed we will be able to make the move :)
