Dilemma ......please advise!
 

Hi Everyone

We have been in BC since Jan 09 and I am on Open TWP but managed to secure a transfer with my UK firm. Initially I felt so lucky as no job hunting was needed but I am now struggling because:

1) My commute is around 3 hrs per day. (I have tried driving, sky train and ride share. The latter being the best option but still too long.) Moving is not an option either - we LOVE where we live and also it is a middle ground between OH and mine work.)


2) The job. This is the biggest problem. Although on paper it was a direct transfer (same job title, description, band etc) it hasn’t been. It has been a large drop down the ladder and I’m not really doing anything similar to what I did in the UK. As an added extra I haven’t found a social circle at work. It’s got to the point now where I dread going in and its causing arguments with OH. :(

When we originally looked at coming here we had talked about me doing something new and getting a different job here but would I be crazy to start again?? I’d be happy to do seasonal, part time etc but there doesn’t seem to be too much out there. We could survive on OH wage but we have got used to two wages coming in.

It has started to affect my whole outlook on this move and I can see me becoming a negative/ whinging/ generally horrible person. I know when I’m doing it and I can’t stop myself. It’s driving me nuts!!!!

What would you do? Jack in the job? Hold off till I secure a new job? Stick it out at work? :unsure: Has any one else been in this situation? ANY advice/ words of wisdom/ ANYTHING would be great.

My two cents would be that you have moved 7000 miles away from home and you have effectively been demoted. If you can afford to start over again then do it (you already have for the most part right?).

Are there things you can do realistically to make the working environment
more favourable for you? .Why are there difficulties connecting socially
with your coworkers at work?.Maybe the job is stressful and no longer stimulating?.

Get a journal , write out your thoughts, feelings , what are your expectations from your job and coworkers.

If nothing works,then come out with some coping strategies to survive
at your work place until such time that you are able to find a new job.
Leave when you are still strong.

Depending on your interests ,join evening classes in the community centers to meet people,networking and learn new things. You never know,you may find your new job / venture around your neighbourhood.

My two cents: definitely start looking for an alternative job - if you can stick this one out until you have a replacement in hand, so much the better but the bottom line is that it's not the right job for you and it's making you stressed and unhappy so if you can afford to do so, ditch it.

Just a quick update. Decided I will hand in my notice at the end of the month . Untill then I will be on the job hunt. Anything to keep a few extra dollars coming in.

Feeling quite liberated and looking forward to starting again.:)

On the list for today is redoing my resume. Last time I did retail/service was years ago so I will have to get creative! Then going to hit the streets on the look out for those help wanted signs!
