QUOTE=Kerry-lancs;10578961]So moving to canada in 3 weeks, was wondering what different words they use to us??
Like shopping centre is a mall, cot is a crib and also if any words that are used in u.k are used in a different context in canada?
Sorry if this is a silly question?!?[/QUOTE]

This week at work I asked a colleague if they had any Sellotape - nobody knew what I meant:-(. It's scotchtape here:confused:

Forget all your school French when ordering a croissant. This officially bilingual French-speaking country does NOT call it a "CWAH-songg", they call it a "kru-SONTT".

At least they have a go. In the US they call them crescent rolls. :)

The Road-Pavement one here is critical. A request to a canadian child to 'stay on the pavement' can have horrible consequences.

crescent rolls look like croissants but are made differently and texture is different (single layer of pastry, not nice and flaky like a croissant)

I've only heard bras referred to here as bras; maybe that's just because there's too many Brits in the town? :p

Yes, be careful re the rubber/eraser one and defo the fag/cigarette one! Had a friend that made a quick exit from a small bar after asking if they had any fags - he didn't make that mistake again! :eek:

Also just thought of:

full stop = period
turf (grass) = sod
windscreen = windshield
caravan = trailer

Ilove all the sod signs at the side of the road. I want to put one up with the f word on it.

Round here we have 'sod for sale', and my favourite is an establishment of 'Sodding Specialists'.

For those smokers out there, never ever nip out for a fag!

Cottaging doesn't refer to anonymous sex between men in a public lavatory or cruising for sexual partners with the intention of having sex elsewhere. It means bragging to your neighbours about having a country cottage.
