Deferring UK pension

I am now 71 and taking my Canadian pensions. Finally decided that I should probably claim my UK pension from my 14 years of work before moving to Canada.

The UK govt web site talks about the amount increasing if you defer (which I have apparently done by default) but also allows me to state when I want my pension to start.

So here's the question that I can't find any answers to. How far back can I start the pension? Can I ask to start at the time I reached 65? (6 years ago) or can I only backdate it 12 months (the Canadian limit) or ... ???

Anyone happen to know?

Many thanks. My many searches with google had not come up with that document. I must bookmark AgeUk - looks like they have useful information.

Now to try and fill out the silly form!

Might also be worth checking to see if you can buy extra years contributions if you've only got 14 years worth - no idea if you can after you've reached pension age though.

You can chose to either have your pension backdated from the date of retirement age 6 years ago, in which case you will receive a lump sum, or receive a higher monthly amount.

Ignore the form and call them. They will process the claim over the phone if they have sufficient information to confirm your identity. Or you can claim on-line as per Para 6 of the document BristolUk gave you in #2 above.
