Deferring UK pension
I am now 71 and taking my Canadian pensions. Finally decided that I should probably claim my UK pension from my 14 years of work before moving to Canada.
The UK govt web site talks about the amount increasing if you defer (which I have apparently done by default) but also allows me to state when I want my pension to start. So here's the question that I can't find any answers to. How far back can I start the pension? Can I ask to start at the time I reached 65? (6 years ago) or can I only backdate it 12 months (the Canadian limit) or ... ??? Anyone happen to know? |
Re: Deferring UK pension
6.1 Backdating and advance claims. You can claim your State Pension up to, but no more than, four months in advance. It is a good idea to claim in advance as it may take a while for your claim to be processed. The maximum period of backdating is 12 months, but a claim cannot be backdated to a date before you reached State Pension age. You are not paid interest on any backdated pension. If you claim more than 12 months after you became entitled, you are treated as having deferred it |

Many thanks. My many searches with google had not come up with that document. I must bookmark AgeUk - looks like they have useful information.
Now to try and fill out the silly form! Thanks again. |

Might also be worth checking to see if you can buy extra years contributions if you've only got 14 years worth - no idea if you can after you've reached pension age though.

Re: Deferring UK pension
You can chose to either have your pension backdated from the date of retirement age 6 years ago, in which case you will receive a lump sum, or receive a higher monthly amount.
