That's the one.

Think we'll rent an apartment next time though.

Oh that wasn't my salary, i'm a mechanical engineer lol.

At first it will be a sole salary, I'm not planning on living downtown, possibly Port Moody (approx 45mins from where I'll work and my wife holds out hope of seeing an orca from there), we're not planning on buying or having kids anytime soon and we already have a car.

We're only looking for one decent holiday a year and maybe some weekends up at whistler. The main issue is trying to find an apartment as big as we have now (1200) even taking into account it'll be more expensive. Thanks for the numbers earlier in the thread, gives a me a good base to work from.

There is nothing like BUPA in Canada, to cover private surgery etc, you either stay in the provincial care system or pay cash in the US for faster treatment. There is an argument that high income earners are better off paying for dental and drugs etc out of their own pocket rather than paying high monthly premiums for accidental expenses that the provincial plans dont cover. If your OH has a job with benefits then his plan will cover you anyway.

Check the wiki on health care for a bigger picture.

You can`t buy private health insurance. You will pay $110 a month between you for the Medical Services Plan which covers access to doctors, medical specialists and hospitals. Your OH`s company may cover this. You can buy insurance to cover prescription drugs and it is likely your OH`s company will have a scheme they subsidize.

Otherwise for private treatment it is off to the US and pay through the nose.

Really jealous. Nice holidays are on the + side of our 'pros and cons of move' chart. The 14-hour flights from the UK are killing us. Just thinking of all the places we can explore (including places in Canada) makes me want to pack and move right now!

I guess I'll be off to mainland Europe for dental then (as I am now....). No change there then.

Just think of all the culture and history in Europe that is only an hour or two away that you are leaving behind.... Swings and Roundabouts at best on that front. Travel in Europe is far cheaper.

I think you'll need access to a car for sure so. I've mentioned it before. You should join Car2Go

I'm not sure why people think you'd need a car. All I know is that we lived without one, successfully, for 8 years and we didn't even live in downtown Vancouver. AND we had a child.

Dental you pay for, childbirth is covered by the province, presuming that coverage has kicked in by then (there is a wait period in most provinces of 3 months before coverage starts).
