Day trip to Seattle without PR Card?
 

Hi there
Next month I will be landing in Vancouver, staying for a week, then returning to New Zealand to settle things.

My son who lives in Vancouver has ideas of taking us on a day trip to Seattle & we are wondering how I would get on with Border Control as I will not have a PR card. Will there be problems returning back into Vancouver do you think?

We did the same thing and there was no problem. The Proof of Residency which is stapled into your passport when you land in Vancouver is enough and serves as a PR card until you get the real one. (I presume you will be going by road)

Be prepared for a lengthy wait at border crossing at Blaine-the US likes you to fill in endless forms so set off early for Seattle. Border crossing back into Canada is usually very quick.

PR Card is not needed on the land frontier, if you are driving.

One more thing we're wondering..I've heard that quite often Vancouver don't ask for your Goods to Follow list when your only landing for a week. Do I need to list everything on my Goods Accompanying list again on the Goods to Follow seeing as these items will be following again at a later date? Hope this makes sense?

I don't have any Vancouver-specific information, but I was told, to put as much as possible on the "Goods to follow" list, since that would be treated as "tax free" to bring into the country, even if it follows at a later stage.

But that is the knowledge of 2004 when I immigrated. Maybe things changed.

When we landed we were asked for ours.

Your goods accompanying must include all that is with you when you land.

The Goods following must be everything that isn't and that will be coming over at a later date.

Thanks...so if I'm taking 2 suitcases, a camera & cellphone for landing, these will be on Goods Accompanying list.

All of these are coming back to NZ with me.

Should they be listed again on Goods to Follow as well seeing they are coming into Canada again at a later date?

AFAIK there is no down side to listing things on your GTF list. You don't have to import everything on your GTF list. So yes.
