How much is a pint, and are there Indian curry houses in Ontario? :beer:

A pint is cheaper, but it's not like what you might be acustomed to. Also I won't say there are curry houses, they are more like restaurants, and the nan breads look like pita breads. :mad:

The nicer ones seem to be in the Mississauga and Brampton area, and there is a reason for that, just think Bradford and brick lane in the UK

Well I do intend to get aquainted very quickly with the "local" brew, :p and it sounds like a trip to Mississauga is in order :beer:

In downtown Toronto a pint can range from $4.75 to around $6.25 for "local" brews - Blue, Canadian, Coors etc. If you drink Stella (which is very popular) then it is around the $7 mark. As for curry houses, I wouldn’t bother trying. Little India would be your best bet but elsewhere they haven’t a clue how to make a decent curry. Some of the stuff I've been served tastes like Campbell’s condensed tomato soup!!!.

I had a beef vindaloo delivered from Shan-I-Hind in Little India this week. I thought it very good. A friend from Kerala described the food at Madras Durbar, also in Little India, as being just like her mother used to make. I'd say there's no problem with curry. Avoid the Udaoi Palace though, it's India's McDonalds.

Canadian beer is however generally very bad, the US imports are better, even the big brewery products like Sam Adams and Fat Tire. However, since pubs keep Fullers London Pride and ESB, one really doesn't have to bother with the local stuff after the initial experimentation. If you haven't tried Canadian beer at all I'd suggest having a 50.

Not sure about the beer as we haven't made it to the local yet (the place to go is the Legion on a Friday night for the 'meat draw'!!!).
Absolutely no curry in Northern Ontario - we're going cold turkey at the moment, altho' we did find some Patak's madras and tikka masala tinned sauces in Walmart on Saturday!! No popadoms tho'.

Curries and Canada don't mix...or even exist. My experience to date in tracking down a decent 'Ruby' has been Tragic! :eek: Had learned to live with it, however, being back in the UK for 10 days recently has revived the malady...:scared:

I am sure at least one excuse for a curry house exists out there somewhere, but for me the quest continues.

Unless you have been recommended to a particular place...by someone you can trust to be in a position to give an informed opinion, forget it! As the ad re banking states 'Save your money'

Curry: We make our own, based on recipes but with our own spin, we cook up a huge pot and what's left we freeze for sometime later. Naan breads from the supermarket are fine for now but again we will soon be making our own. MOH makes a mean lemon rice or veg rice too :D and all much cheaper than a restaurant meal too.

Beer: We are lucky here that we have Okanagan Spring beer, reasonably priced, a range of different brews and as good a supping ale as any "wonderbrew" from dear old Blighty :zzz: :zzz:

We are well off for good beer in this area (Oakville-Bronte-Burlington-) having a few British-style pubs. In Britain I was a real ale drinker so I find all North American beer too fizzy and, because it's normally served chilled, almost tasteless. For an extra dollar or so a pint I can enjoy good imported British drafts including Boddingtons, Tetleys, Double Diamond, Fullers, Bass, Caffreys and at one time even Speckled Hen. There are others I cannot remember right now and Guinness is sold almost everywhere. There is an established, very popular Indian Restaurant just up the road at Guelph and New. Very good. Better still an all-you-can-eat Indian restaurant has recently opened at Guelph and Upper Middle. $9.99 and the best I have had over here. The number of Indians who use it must be a good recommendation. We tried one which opened last year in Oakville. Not good!

Ahh you just broke rule #1....thou shalt not critique Oakville, t'is the hallowed hermitage of all things British.

Whoooerrr! Meant more as a criticism of an Indian restaurant, I thought. I allow myself that luxury.

we have been to an indian restaurant in Hamilton, it was fine, same as most curry houses around here but not a patch on Southall, Wembley Harrow ones.
the pappadoms were curled and baked not flat and fried, but a plus was you could have beef curry

but i've also been to a vile one in peterborough, but that was just plain awful cooking all round andthey werent indian/bangladeshi/pakistani

you can buy Pataks curry pastes to make your own though if you dont have the energy to do your own spices

I am always surprised no one mentions Wellington County ale when discussing beer in Ontario. I am not much of a beer drinker myself but the other half thinks it is very good, and he is quite a supporter of the "real ale" campaign. It is brewed in Guelph, I think, and is available in many pubs as well as the Beer Store, of course.

Neither of us can stand curry, so I can't help you there I'm afraid.
