It's terrible but rightly or wrongly, we perceive such innocent bystander occurrences to be so irregular as to not merit adjusting our habits and how we live our lives here. Our perception in the UK was that the threat was real and near at hand (not of being shot, more of being a victim of crime of some description) and it did influence our day to day lives. It is that perceived threat of day to day crime (poor wording but you know what we mean) that seems much less "in our face" here.

Also using the word 'epidemic' to describe a handful of shooting deaths is just crazy talk, as much as the newspapers love using words like that (look at the knife crime headlines in Britain!). There were more murders in Calgary one year in the late 70's than now with a population of a few hundred thousand people, and it's still around 30 people per year on average now, which is a pretty good stat for a city of over a million people...and only some of those are gang/gun-related. Some are domestics etc too. As for initiation rites...you may have been watching too many movies. This simply doesn't happen in Calgary. I find people who knock downtown watch too much OTT north american-style news and never spend any time downtown anyway. Oh, and homeless people tend to be victims of crime more than perpetrators.

i hate the tv over here, don't watch much of it - okay the rites thing may sound a bit too far fetched - south central la stuff , but the head in the sand attitude by the 'unaffected' in Calgary i find amazing - 'these guys can drive around all day shooting each other' type attitude - what am saying is if allowed to cotinue un-checked, ie these guys give no second thought to handing a gun to a junior to wipeout the other gang member, in turn the kid has no real issue with it, how long until it does really start affecting the public ?

i don't think it was really a handfull of shooting deaths we were discussing was it ? - you can mess with stats all day long , bottom line for me is this may be the thin edge of the wedge re gun crime, how long until joe suburbia trades in his baseball bat for a ppk (sorry a bit too bond there) to protect his home & family from the perceived threat of home invasion etc

ps i do live in the burbs but happen to frequent downtown (at night , oooh) fairly often

there was stories in the papers about folk who used to frequent downtown bars, taking up drinking at their neighbourhoods hang outs instead, whether the perceived threat was greater than the imminent danger is immaterial as they chose to modify the behaviour anyway - of course this may have been the media hyping up the situation - but i seem to remember they were real newspaper interviews

I think the gang problem in Calgary is horrific. Way way worse than the city of a comparable size that we lived near in UK. BUT the other crime I would say is way lower- particularly the burglary and vehicle crime. So I feel fairly safe here.

I would look very keenly at your commute and use that to select where you live. There are plenty of good family neighbourhoods that would suit and so I would think hard about where you have to commute to and how best to do that.

I worked in prison here, and with street gangs.
They are a tiny number of teenageers and young adults.
Yes, gun violence is troubling, but panicking doesn't help.
The streets truly are safe here.
