our bank person at RBC told us to wait for 3 months after we arrived to apply. He said that a written appliction through the bank would be looked upon more favourably as we probably didn't have enough Canadian credit history to apply online. Even though we didn't use the account until we arrived in june we opened our account on our recce last September and he said that would also go in our favour as we held the account for over a year.
We got the card without any hassle and now they are asking if we want more!

We changed our ontario account to alberta and they asked if we needed a credit card

said yes and that was it, now have one and we can pay the money off everytime he puts gas in the car, just to build up our history
worth speaking to the bank, if they are unwilling to help, maybe try another bank

RBC gave us a card on the condition we left with them enough money to pay spending limit. The money's on a 2 year bond. Once we have an income, we can increase the limit no problem. We're not short of cash so no problem for us.

We had to ask that the monthly payment was paid automatically as we don't want to pay interest.

My lawyer advised me a long time back to apply localy (Kuwait) for an Amex in order to maintain a credit history that will be very helpful later on in Canada. reading this thread, I'm not sure how effective this can be?

Amex will (sometimes? always?) open you an account in Canada based on your existing Amex account elsewhere in the world.

Other lenders won't look at your history in Kuwait, but once you have your Canadian Amex card, you'll start building a Canadian credit record. It's one way around the problem of getting a first credit card.
