Default CRA Tax Return - file as Self Employed or not???

In July 2013 I lost my job at the end of my maternity leave. (and yes, they found a way to make that legal)

I got about $6,500 from a few little independent contracts I managed to get.

These little contract opportunities seem to be continuing into 2014 which is useful seeing as I haven't found another job.

Question: What are the pros and cons to filing as Self Employed vs. an individual who had some casual income?

Thanks in advance

Casual income is usually someone who has an irregular job, with source deductions made. With untaxed income, you are self employed, you can make some deductions for expenses, you need to file bu June 15. However if you owe tax, any tax not paid by April 30, attracts interest until paid, but no penalty if paid by June 15.

If you lost your job after maternity leave, maybe consult an employment lawyer. Employment Standards are the minimum, however common law can demand a higher standard.

Slightly off topic, but have you considered applying for the BC Self Employment Program? You are paid for up to 48 weeks whilst you develop your own business. (You could qualify based on your Maternity Benefit or EI).

http://www.boundarycf.com/self-employment/about-program (The program runs through different providers in various areas, this will just give you an idea of what is required).

You should be reporting this as self-employed income.

+1

With the resulting admissible deductions. (I haven't done self employed in a few years, so can't remember what they are offhand, but do recall they were useful)
