Coyotes at the witching hour...
 

Dateline: Saturday 12th November.....just before midnight, Knox Mountain, Kelowna, is it's usual eerily-quiet self. Not a sound from the 200 or so dwellings dotted around the area.

In the distance a dog barks, concern conveyed within the sound. Again a little louder, a little more worried. Quiet descends again. Then exactly on the stroke of midnight, "ow-woo" the sharp cry of a coyote heard about 1/4 mile from us on the other side of the mountain.

Eeek, the first hearing! We are no longer 'coyote virgins', they are definitely out there. A reminder that we are on the edge of wilderness, and that things live out there with more legs and teeth than us and they would eat us, given half a chance :eek:

It is quite eerie isn't it the first time you hear them. We have a pack of 4 adults and 2 puppies living on our farm. They are beautiful and healthy and we see them all the time. They only live a few hundred yards from our house and when I ride in the Coyote Woods (named after them) we pass their den. They don't bother us at all but if you are sharp sighted you will see them watching you when you ride past their home. They do make incredible rackets sometimes though.

There is a pack of coyotes living on the farmland behind our house, and they never bother us or our pets. They are healthy and beautiful. What really sets them off is when an ambulance goes along the main road with siren going, and within seconds they set up a howling that goes on for ages!

We hear them at night up here in Raleigh just outside Kamloops. Some nights they set our dog off barking. The notice board up by the gas station always has pictures of missing cats - is this just a coincedence?
