Costco shopping....
 

Hello all

Does anyone go to Costco for grocery shopping and if so do you think you save much over normal supermarket prices? What is cheap and what is not in Costco Canada?

Frozen Ace baguettes are cheap. Cat litter in 50lb boxes is cheap. Unfortunately Costco post their meat and produce prices in metric while everyone else uses imperial so unless something is dramatically cheaper or you're willing to poke around with a calcultor it's all a bit of a guess; we just get whatever looks good.

Even going in Costco for a look see seems to involve spending at least $100......

We find Costco good for Cheese and Meat especially. (Had a cracking beef roast the other weekend from Costco). Bulk tins of tomatoes seem reasonable. We dont generally buy veggies there. Ciabata rolls are good as well.

Often times its not so much the cost saving as the additional choice over Sobeys/Dominion.

We do Costco for meat mainly. Always seems good quality (don't like the sausages though). Quite often find something we didn't know we needed :D Just watch the prices on some stuff it's not always cheap all round - and do you really want 100 tins of chicken noodle soup?

We buy some meats at Costco and I'd agree with others it always seems to be good quality. They have really nice fresh lamb chops. :)

We've been buying Romain lettuce hearts there recently 6 for $3.99 a lot cheaper than Safeways etc. Most other things are a little cheaper than the retail stores but not a whole lot.

Just as an aside to anyone living in Northwest Calgary or Cochrane.

The new Costco in the NW at top end of Sarcee Trail by the new Home Depot, is supposed to open on March 31st I've been told. :)

We do both Costco and Sam's Club and find them quite similar. Some things are much cheaper (like the salad stuff someone else mentioned) and some things are stuff you just can't get elsewhere. The meat at both is better quality than at the regular supermarkets as they both carry AAA grade and nothing less while most supermarkets have A or AA which is noticably lower in quality. They get in seasonal items that are often very good buys. Unless you always buy in large quantity, you will probably still wind up at the regular grocery store for some items as well as produce since they don't have a huge selection past the salad stuff.

If we had to chose one, we would go with Sam's Club only since it is closest to us, but there really isn't much difference between the two. We only got both because they offered us a $30 gift card to sign up at Costco again. :)
