Cheapskate. Why didn't you buy her something decent?

Her palate for wine wasn't that refined. She actually prefers cider and there was some good cider available from northern France.

We spent our money more on baked goods.

French beer is crap. Kronenburg and Pelforth and Heineken brands everywhere. Rhinberg from St. Omer was the bottom of the barrel beer. It was given to us free with our 5 euro pizza at a pizza place in Nice that was all cash.

I think that NB's GST rate has to be considered alongside how much you get back.

I don't mean the normal quarterly GST credit - as welcome as that is - I mean the extra one that was introduced when they increased the GST rate.

As a single person you can be on $45k and still get $100 extra back. A couple with kids can be on $65k and get $200 back. Obviously bigger credits are available.

Remember, this is to take care of the extra cost as a result of the increase.

The GST increase of 1.5% puts an extra $1.50 per $100 spend only on items attracting GST. Or $15 per $1000 spend.

So that family with an income of $65k (above average here) gets an additional $200 credit and that's enough for the extra GST on $13,000.
Does a family on $65k income spend as much as $13,000 a year on items that attract GST? Probably not.

It seems to me that most people in NB get back a bigger sum than the extra they pay.

A tax that takes more from the wealthier portion of the population. Who'd have thought that would happen in North America

(NB is, surprisingly, not alone in this idea)
Only a bureaucrat would think that it is a good idea to take money from people simply to hand it back to them. Why not simply increase the tax the wealthy pay on their income?

But that's Canada all over isn't it? Canada likes bureaucracy.

The country takes money from people when it's often unnecessary and gives some/all of it back once a year when administering everyone's tax returns when they needn't actually do either.

They send GST credits to people 4 times a year and send child benefits to (the same) people 12 times a year (not even combining the two payments when done every three months). They send my mother in law's monthly GIS and OAS separately instead of combining them. They could actually combine many of these payments and save a small fortune in admin costs.

Why not simply increase the tax the wealthy pay on their income?
And have people bleating about their tax dollars and how unfair it is that they have to pay?

Canada loves this sort of bureaucracy. But given the collection/refund of GST is already in place, it's actually quite simple to increase the rate and amount collected and to increase the refunds to people already getting them.

Cider (cidre bouché) is produced in western France, specifically in Normandie, perhaps Bretagne too, but less so.

Northern France is Picardy and Pas de Calais. No apples grow there.

I get mine from a farm 5km from here at a wonderful price.

Thanks for the clarification. When you are in Nice and Menton everywhere in France is 'north'.

From what I can gather this movie
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bienve...z_les_Ch%27tis

summed up many of the stereotypes of Pas de Calais.

A bit like that famous sign "Watford and the North" at the start of the M1.

Pathetic.

An excellent movie is that. But if you took it in properly you'd understand both the irony and the desirability of escaping from the chi-chi parts of this country.

Hatfield and the North, innit? At Mill Hill Roundabout or thereabouts. There was a hippy band named for the sign. John Peel was rather a champion of theirs.
