Cost of Living Halifax

Is a basic net monthly retirement income of approx $6,000 Canadian sufficient for a couple. No mortgage or debt just routine living expenses to cater for.

Re: Cost of Living Halifax

As someone who had a net income of as little as $14k for a family of four for a chunk of our time here (mortgage free but housing costs still $350 a month) I was about to say that $6k would be impossible, even for two less.

But then I saw $6k a month. You'd live like Royalty.

Though I dare say there may be some on BE who might say it was just do-able.

Hello and welcome to BE!

It would depend on which Province - and where - you were planning on living and what your lifestyle preferences are. Do you want/need a small 1 bedroom apartment /condo / townhouse or a 3 bedroom detached house with a large back garden - or a McMansion? By the water or in the city or in the country? Each preference will result in different property maintenance costs, utility costs and City taxes costs.
Do you need to be near transport - do you want/need to run 1 or 2 vehicles - are you happy with a small run around or do you need a big people carrier or truck - do you want 'toys' like snowmobile or boat...

Do you like to eat higher quality or imported food or are you happy to shop in places like Nofrills, food basics. Do you prefer to eat out - if so, restaurant or fast food? Do you like to socialise, go to pubs, do you want to travel, nationally or internationally .. do you like to participate in activities or are you home bodies..

See what I mean?

There's no such thing as 'routine - it's subjective! :D What is basic costs for one person won't be the same for others!
If you could give an idea of where you are planning on living, the type of accommodation you hope to be buying, an intimation on your lifestyle.. people will be able to offer their opinions based on similar expenses.

As an example - for Bristol, living in New Brunswick with no transport costs, $6k would likely be more than adequate - but for someone living in a house or condo in downtown Vancouver - or in a large house in Ontario - who have expensive tastes and run 2 vehicles, perhaps not so much!:)
:)
I'm presuming you have a route to Permanent Residency to live in Canada?

For the avoidance of doubt I’m a Canadian citizen and my wife is a Perm Resident....... it’s complicated but we haven’t taken up residence yet. It would be Halifax.

Re: Cost of Living Halifax

We would be looking at a house circa 3,000 sq feet in say Hammonds Plains, Fall River or similar...... we don’t mind a drive into Halifax. Naturally we have the funds to pay for the house we only need one vehicle. We lived in Texas for five years before relocating back to the UK.
