Cornish Pasty's in Calgary
 

I'm trying to educate my Canadian colleagues in the way of the Pasty, does anyone know where I can locate good quality Pasty's in Calgary? Pork Pies would be good too.

I think I've seen pasties in Sobeys. Otherwise you might look in the Scottish butchers, (MacEwan's?) on Elbow Drive?

I've seen them at Safeway in their deli section sold hot or cold I think, but I don't know what they are like.

To the OP, have you tried the Farmers Market in Currie Barracks on Crowchild Trail SW, last time I was there, there was someone selling pork pies they tasted very good, so I'm told. Where is that tongue in cheek smiley. ;)

It might have been the Little Jack Horner stall.

Doesnt take much to make a good Cornish Pasty go the whole hog and knock a couple up you will be surprised (this is from the man who's wife makes them :D)

Couldn't agree more Dave. Hope nobody is fooled into thinking that a certain make (G***ters) are a proper Cornish pasty! When we visit family up country we have to take a load of pasty's up with us. :thumbsup:

I was born in Redruth and even though I left at the age of two I am genetically engineered to like Cornish Pasties.

The little english shop in Mckenzie Towne has a freezer with pies and pasties in it, but they will prob be very expensive like anything else in there (although i end up in there anyway quite often for my beans and chocolate fixes)

We can vouch for Steve P's comments re the Little Jack Horner stall at the Calgary Farmer's Market. Apparently the guy that makes the Pork Pies there is Melton Mowbray trained and the pies seem authentic enough for that to be a true statement. Indeed, we were that impressed, we covered the issue on our blog back in November 07...

Shame you're not here - Zehrs sells individual Melton Mowbray pies, and across the water in the upper peninsula of Michigan, Cornish pasties are a huge deal. I guess some Cornish miners ended up there at some point and the pasties are now a big tourist attraction, and pretty delicious!

Was giving 2 to taste test:) by Save on Foods on the island, very nice they were to, tasted even better being free, scotch eggs would be nice too.

Have tried the Sobey's ones............hhhmmm if they weren't pretending to be Pasty's they'd be okay but as they are they are poor. Half my family are from Padstow, got some Aunts & Uncle's still there, and I lived in Redruth when I was really young so I too am genetically engineered to love pasty's. Fully agree that a Ginsters is nothing like a pasty...........got in a discussion with a fellow Brit here about Ginsters and the fact that I don't class things like Cheese & Onion pasty's as pasty's. A pasty should only contain Steak, Potatoes, Swede & Onion.

Will see what I can find at the Farmers Market, I had a Tourtiere from there a while back (yum) but didn't see any pasty's or pork pies.

Their pies are a nice little treat and we often stock up on a few when we are there. However, the Little Jack Horner stall is tucked down one of the aisles in the centre of the market.
